Arte looks up from his paperwork. "Nowhere special. That's the kind of thing I pick up when I see it, usually at yard sales. You'd be amazed what people get rid of when the run out of room. Sometimes I end up with so many that even I run out of space to hold them. That's when they go on sale." He turns back to work.
I am continuing to sort through the Chefs Hats when I come across a couple of deflated balloons. "Hmmm, this is strange. I wonder how these got in here."
Arte looks back up and frowns. "Those must be left over from Krystin's party awhile back. You know, you guys really made a mess in here. I had no idea that Karen was such a party animal. I am glad that everyone stayed to help clean up afterward, but it looks like some stuff got missed."
"Yeah, that was a fun party." I smile. "But coming across these balloons suddenly makes me feel like I have forgotten something, something important." I sit down in a Royal Banquet Chair and try to remember. "Arte, is there something I was supposed to do?"
"Yeah, you're supposed to be taking all of those Chef's Hats up to the front room, not sitting th..."
"OH NO!" I jump up out of the Royal Banquet Chair, interupting Arte. "I totally forgot about my niece's birthday! My sister is going to kill me!" I look down at my watch. "OH NO!" I shout again. "The Kinz Post is due to close in a few minutes and I don't even have a gift for her yet. Arte you've gotta help me!"
Two minutes later I am racing down Main street as fast as I possibly can. "Oh, please, please, please let them still be open." I've got a Pineapple Lamp in one hand and a Queen Maries Periwig in the other. They may not be the gifts she was hoping for, but they were what Arte happened to have on hand, and at least they'll be there on time, that is, if I can get there before the office closes. "Her birthday has been on the same day for nearly ten years. You think I'd remember it once in a while." I scold myself.
I arrive at the Kinz Post Office totally out of breath, just as the employees are locking the doors. "No, no, please let me in. I've really got to get this stuff in the mail today!" I start pounding on the glass. "Please!"
The employee with they keys opens the door a crack and says, "Sorry, we're just about to load up the truck. We don't have time to take in any more packages." He starts to close the door again.
"No, you don't understand." I plead. "These gifts are for my niece's birthday. It is very, very important that I get them in the mail today. You've gotta let me in. I'll do anything."
He looks me up and down and then says, "Hey, you're Merthyn aren't you?" I nod. "Hey everyone, this is Arte's friend, Merthyn." He shouts into the office. Turning back to me he says, "You know, we all really like that list you post. It has helped a lot of us out." He pauses." I guess I can make an exception and let you in, IF you promise to do something for me."
"Of course, ANYTHING!" I say, and he lets me into the shop.
Two hours later I emerge from the Kinz Post Office, totally exhausted. I had no idea how much mail went through that office each day. In exchange for allowing me to mail my gifts, the staff put me to work sorting packages and getting them ready to load on to the truck. I'm not very good at math, so I had to keep moving the same packages around and around until I got the stacks right. Right now my arms feel like they are about to fall off.
The good news is that my packages made it onto the truck and will arrive in time for my niece's birthday. As for me, I am going to go home and crash in bed. Hope you all have a nice day. Oh, by the way, here's the list for Sunday.
