It was a dark and stormy night in the Curio Shop. (Must be all those rainy day windows Arte likes to hoard.....and don’t even ask, guys, ‘cuz he won’t sell them. Believe me, I’ve tried.) The store was so dark that I stubbed my toe on a medieval trophy pedestal.
"Ouch!" I cried.
"Who’s there?" demanded a gruff-but-almost-shaking voice.
"Arte?" I could see a little bit of light now. Arte knelt on the floor behind the counter, clutching his 8 ball candle.
"Why are you hiding behind the counter?" I asked as I crouched down beside him.
"I’m not hiding!" He whispered. " I’m...uh..thinking."
Before Arte could answer, a terrible, ghastly sound echoed through the Curio Shop.
I shivered. "Arte, what’s that sound?"
"That’s what I’m thinking about. I’ve considered all the possibilities and......"
"Ah-rooooooooooo......." It’s so loud this time that Arte and I both jump.
"....and I think it must be a ghost," Arte finished.
My stomach somersaulted. "A ghost?" I squeaked. "Are there ghosts in Webkinz World?"
I buried my face in the sleeve of Arte’s bomber jacket. "How could this happen?"
He patted my head. "I don’t know, Merthyn. The bulb in my pineapple lamp burned out. I went to get another one and, as I passed the Egyptian room, I heard it for the first time."
"The Egyptian room? Arte, you don’t think it could be a mummy, do you?"
"Mummy or daddy, I’m not letting it take over my shop!" Arte leapt to his feet. "Come on, Merthyn."
Arte’s so brave. He marched down the corridor, holding the 8-ball candle up, so we could both see. I tried to be brave, too, but my tail was shaking just a little.
Defiantly, Arte pushed the door to the Egyptian room open. Luckily, all the ancient pyramid lamps were lit, so we could see the whole room. Arte and I looked around: wallpaper, flooring, columns, desks, sandstone pedestals, but no ghost.
"It sounds like it’s coming from the Egyptian vase." I scampered over. (It’s a lot easier to be brave when it’s light.) I hopped up onto a sacred scribe desk and peered down into the vase. What did I see? A little chihuahua, curled up inside, sound asleep and.....snoring.
"Who’s Flame?" Arte asked
"He’s a friend of The Ducky’s. He must have wandered in here.....oh, look! There are little pawprints all over this sacred scribe desk.. Maybe he climbed up there, fell in the Egyptian vase, and decided to take a nap while he was waiting to be rescued. And we thought his snoring was a ghost!"
"You thought it was a ghost," Arte corrected. "I never really thought it was." He frowned. "I hate to wake the little fella up. On the other paw, scared customers don’t buy a whole lot."
"I have an idea. Gimme a boost, Arte."
He helped me into the vase. Carefully, I rolled Flame the chihuahua from his back onto his side, then I climbed back out.
"Ok, he should be quiet now," I said.
"Good deal. Next time The Ducky stops by, she can take him home. Thanks a lot, Merthyn. I’ll just grab a bulb for the hockey lamp, and write down the list for you."
"Sounds good, Arte. ‘Night-‘Night, Flame!"
