Hmm, hum , h'm, hem... they are all in the dictionary, interjections expressing hesitation or dissent. They are a perfectly acceptable, official part of the English language. Yes I keep a great big huge real dictionary by my computer. Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary.
Well I do sometimes, to make it sound like I'm thinking.. Like:
Hmmmmmm... pollz?
But I also use it if I wanna strectch out my words because of 10 letters. I could say
Pollz?
But I'd need 4 more letters\characters before I could post..
Do you know what I mean?

I'm sorry that it bothers you - I can't really help it.

I'm just curious why people write "hmmm" in their posts. When you're typing it's not live and for me a hmmm has always been a signal for, I'm searching in my brain for what I want to say. If you are typing a post, you can take all the time you need to search your brain before responding. I'm curious why anyone would want to write hmmm in their post.
Hmmm... well, I do it cause I'm thinking and when I'm talking to people on the forum I want my speech to be more like I'm talking to them in person. So if I'm thinking about something I usually put that Tee hee!
My grandfather types like he talks. Since he is Italian, he says, "Da" instead of "The" in real life and on the internet. It gives it more dialect, more of a human-like trait. It symbolizes thinking, so someone might be wanting to post more, but they do not know how to explain it, yet.
I do that because it adds an element of 'humanity' to the thread. It is not just a machine typing out a phrase, answer or question. There are times that I do have those 'Hmm ' Moments. I also use the because that is the closest to 'Thinking or think' about it.
Guess this one might work better
It makes me feel like I'm acting as I normally would! It's how I would react in real life ("Hmm...well, I'm not so sure I understand your approach."), so it's how I react on the internet.
