Default Writing "hmmm" in posts?

I'm just curious why people write "hmmm" in their posts. When you're typing it's not live and for me a hmmm has always been a signal for, I'm searching in my brain for what I want to say. If you are typing a post, you can take all the time you need to search your brain before responding. I'm curious why anyone would want to write hmmm in their post.

Default Re: Writing "hmmm" in posts?

I think it gives the post life, and makes it more interesting to read. Sometimes, it helps the flow of the worlds; and sometimes, it adds a feeling of hesitation. "Hmm" is kinda like well, or umm.
For instance, what if I started this post as:
"Hmm, I think it gives the post life."
I think it conveys a message of " I'm not really sure but thinking hard"

I write hmm in my posts so that you can know that I really tried to think about my answer before I typed it. (even though it may not seem like it sometimes)

I do that because it adds an element of 'humanity' to the thread. It is not just a machine typing out a phrase, answer or question. There are times that I do have those 'Hmm ' Moments. I also use the because that is the closest to 'Thinking or think' about it.
Guess this one might work better Click the image to open in full size.

hmmm...I think I agree with Desty...that's probably why I do it too...I know it isn't proper, I would never do it on a business letter, but I try to make my posts seem...more...uh...like real life I guess...

It's to make your posts seem more like real life. It just makes it seem like humanity and makes users know that you really thought about what you were going to post before you posted it. I don't know, I guess "hmm" just makes a post seem more lively.

Sometimes I actually am saying hmmm to myself as I type. It helps me get my thoughts together just like when I'm speaking out loud.

Absolutely, same here. I tend to type the way I talk. Scary, I know.

I use "hmmmm" to convey that I am not quite convinced about something, such as "hmmmm, what you suggest is possible"
