I don't think that it is a popularity contest at all. What would be the point? Sure it is nice to have a lot of rep boxes but how would that be a popularity contest? I don't see people going out and bragging that they have lots of rep boxes and even if they did I still don't think it would be a popularity contest.

Rep is overall a pretty good thing, it shows you have helped someone and it makes you fell so happy and warm getting a new rep! On a bad day, a rep box can make you smile again, but I agree sometimes it is abused. People with many reputation points tend to be treated differently than people with no rep or 1 rep box, and some people may feel left out because of that. Also, some people give out random rep for visiting their threads or just give blank rep boxes, hoping that in turn, they'll visit the thread more and more, or get back rep in return. Rep doesn't mean you should be treated differently, and being obsessed with it gets you nowhere. It's agreat thing if used well, though.
