I was browsing over my User CP and someone gave me a REP that said "Just something to make your day!". I know that's 'random' rep but I think it's really sweet! In fact, (coincidental) I wasn't having the best day that day. So to log on and find out that someone took the time to give me a nice little gift makes your heart skip a beat!
There are disadvantages to REP, like you said popularity, only giving to friends, and Blank REP but overall it's really good!
In my opinion, REP is like that little ray of sunshine after a big storm. It's just a little gift!
Whether you earned it honestly makes the difference. That's when you get into, Random REP, popularity, and only giving to friends oh and Blank too.
Which is why you need to ask yourself, "Did I really earn this?" You may be the most popular but that sometimes isn't necessarily a good thing. Although I'm pretty sure all the 'popular' members are very honest.
And another thing. If you see a person with a TON of Rep boxes, look at the time they joined! It was probably when this Website was put together! It takes TIME and PATIENCE to earn REPs, so don't think that there is an easy way. Unless you want the 'sleazy and lazy' way!
Ok, so basically in my opinion, REP is really great but if you use it wrong, then it's not so great!
It's all in how you use it.
I don't use it, and wish I could turn it off. For ME, it is a useless feature, since I do not need to receive rep from people I do not know well. I got started on the internet at a religious site that used rep, and I never understood that premise, so my view is skewed by my background, and my lack of need to seek acceptance from those on the internet.
For those that like being repped, it is fine, so long as they get repped as often as they want to. The problem surfaces when they feel badly because a stranger did not rep them. And, it seems to make many feel badly when they don't receive rep. I have read many threads where people feel very badly, slighted, and unappreciated, simply because they do not have or receive as much rep as another.
My big concern is cultivating in our youth the need to seek approval from people we do not know, ie on the internet.
But, I bet I am way off base as usual . So, please no one take offense to my view, as it is just one wacky webbie nut's view.
I have to agree with your opinion.
Rep is kinda like a special "thanx" when someone is helpful. Of course, random rep is often given.
There has been a lot of attention about rep lately, but I've also noticed this: The ones giving a lot of attention towards reputation are the ones who don't have it.
i think they are mainly good, they make you feel all good about helping people, nad they provide an incentive to help. i do agree about the "popularity contest" perspective, but i think most of the truely nice and helpful members have learned to look past rep. it can go wither way, but i like it how it is right now
