I have to vote no. I am afraid that a black background would be really hard for me to read. I know I struggle when people use colors for their text and I assume that you would have to use white letters if the background was black. I LOVE coming to WI each day and would hate to not be able to do it because it hurts my eyes.
The calculations that blackle uses to estimate the savings of a black page on google are based on incorrect figures that estimate that 25% of the world still uses CRTs (it is likely lower than that). Even so, they neglect to include the differences between CRT and LCD display technology.
LCD displays use a constant back lighting to provide light to the panel. When an LCD monitor shows pure black, that's actually the point at which the monitor is working the hardest, closing all of those little doors to block the light from coming through. Even if the power to keep all the little doors closed was minimal the best case scenario is that Google changing to a black background would have zero effect on the 75% of the world that uses LCD displays and might actually cost a little MORE energy for them. So it might slightly decrease power consumption to 25% of the world, while increasing power consumption of over 75%.
Blackle was a marketing stunt by its creators, to divert traffic from google and generate income from the ads each time people searched their site.
While I certainly applaud the thought of saving energy on the planet, and appreciate the concept Webkinz5929, I am glad that this is not the case and will not be implemented, however I thank you for your suggestion. I am sure there are many other ways that would work to save energy... how about a campaign to get everyone to turn off all of their lights for a day in rooms that are not being used, WI has a lot of members, so that would be a lot of lights.
That would be a nice idea! Bright colors do take up more energy...or maybe WI could go black every other day? I know that we're all trying to be more conservative to the environment! And, maybe WI can also shut down for an hour every day?? Think of how much energy would be saved! Because it runs all day every day, we're just wasting so much energy..but if we shut down for a little while, we'd really help!
The truth is, that black pixels take up just as much energy as white pixels. You see, there are two kinds of black, when the screen is off, and a black pixel. I'm afraid that you don't save any energy (or very little) from this..
But a black them could be added for people who would like to do this
Or maybe we could have a turn WI off for an hour (or 2) kind of thing. That would save a lot more energy
