Run! Run! Here comes the voice of dissent!
I'm sorry, but I heard this idea and immediately thought "Avoid it like the plague!" I'm sure it sounds like a good idea to most people, just like the whole eStore points thing sounded like a good idea to Ganz, but think of what you're opening the door to!
We've already seen a couple of posts where the line of thinking seems to be "Yeah! Free stuff for me!" and I'm afraid that's going to be a prevailing opinion among members. Everybody who can't afford eStore items, or who's parents won't let them buy from the eStore, or who don't have a credit card or who just don't want to spend the money will come here looking for handouts. No matter how well you regulate and moderate the process people will see some members trading eStore points with other members and the next thing you've got are a dozen posts that are a variant on "I am an orphan and can't afford to buy from the eStore! Boo hoo hoo. Won't somebody give me some points?
And even if you make it very clear that you have to contribute to the process in some way in order to be able to profit from it we are still going to see posts from people who think the very existence of a program of this sort is unfair to those who can't participate. And we will see those posts forever. Forever and ever! I mean, how long has the eStore been open? And we still get "Who thinks the eStore is unfair?" posts a couple of times a week, it seems. I just can't face that all over again! I'm too old for it!
I appreciate the good intentions behind this post, it was a great idea about a way to put left over points to good use and it's always nice to think about other people, but we all know who uses 'good intentions' as paving stones to his front door and I think that in the long run this will cause more hassle then it's probably worth!
And this rant has been brought to you by my two cents worth!
