With the introduction of e-store points, the way we spend money and buy items in the e-store may change slightly, and I was wondering if WI had any plans (or interest) in taking advantage of this.
Because points must be bought in groups of 10,000, but not always SPENT at an even amount, many people MAY wind up with spare points hanging around.
For example, buy 10,000 points for 10 dollars. Buy a tree and a charm for a total of 8500 points, have 1500 (or $1.50) of points left over. While many of us will just save those "extra points" up for future purchases, I'd like the ability to come to WI, and offer to donate those extra points to fellow members here. Conversely, it would be nice to know if I have 5000 points and am looking at a 6000 point item, I can, possibly, rely on WI friends to help complete the order.
Sort of like a giant "Leave a Penny/Take a Penny" bowl.

i think it would have to be more structured than she mentioned. otherwise, there could be people who take a lot more than they give AND people who give a lot more than they receive.

grrreat idea!! *rep*
joining without contributing... wouldn't that border on "trading estore items", which is currently not allowed???
that would a great idea! if i ever do get any of those points, there is no way i would spend them all(not to much in the e-store i like), and it would be nice to donate them to other members. i am glad Justin saw this thread..this could turn out to be really cool
It sounds like a really good idea, but I don't think the Estore is user-friendly enough to do it. I use the estore a lot so I really checked it out when the new stuff was put in. You can only transfer points between gift accounts that you create within your account. So I can't link to an already created account to give it points. I can only create new ones to give points to. And these accounts I create can only get points from me.
I'm sorry, but I heard this idea and immediately thought "Avoid it like the plague!" I'm sure it sounds like a good idea to most people, just like the whole eStore points thing sounded like a good idea to Ganz, but think of what you're opening the door to!
We've already seen a couple of posts where the line of thinking seems to be "Yeah! Free stuff for me!" and I'm afraid that's going to be a prevailing opinion among members. Everybody who can't afford eStore items, or who's parents won't let them buy from the eStore, or who don't have a credit card or who just don't want to spend the money will come here looking for handouts. No matter how well you regulate and moderate the process people will see some members trading eStore points with other members and the next thing you've got are a dozen posts that are a variant on "I am an orphan and can't afford to buy from the eStore! Boo hoo hoo. Won't somebody give me some points? "
And even if you make it very clear that you have to contribute to the process in some way in order to be able to profit from it we are still going to see posts from people who think the very existence of a program of this sort is unfair to those who can't participate. And we will see those posts forever. Forever and ever! I mean, how long has the eStore been open? And we still get "Who thinks the eStore is unfair?" posts a couple of times a week, it seems. I just can't face that all over again! I'm too old for it!
I appreciate the good intentions behind this post, it was a great idea about a way to put left over points to good use and it's always nice to think about other people, but we all know who uses 'good intentions' as paving stones to his front door and I think that in the long run this will cause more hassle then it's probably worth!
And this rant has been brought to you by my two cents worth!
I think it might work well - *if* we could set up a "bank" system similar to the one for WI bucks - so WI would keep track of estore points gifted and used.
It would be tempting though for some of the younger folk whose parents won't buy estore items to *ahem* practice their creative writing skills.... if points were given without deposits.
In the end it's like simpler to just let folk manage their own estore account - but a nice idea if there was a way to work it.
I wonder if there is a way to trade estore points for virtual items? Then people who buy deluxe membership but who don't want to buy from the estore could trade points for rares or retireds and people with spare items who want estore things could get them without buying memberships.
