Updating vBulletin?

What's the status on potentially updating the site's outdated vBulletin? If we want new users to register, it's going to be difficult to do so with such outdated framework, not to mention all the existing issues that make the forum difficult to use as-is (Post/Thread history doesn't work, search doesn't work, no custom avatars, etc.)

It's sad to see the ghost town this forum has become over the years, and while I'm thankful for the progress that has been made (front page updates are back!), I'm still longing for how things used to be :'(

I am completely computer illiterate, so I may be speaking outside of my knowledge base, but I was under the impression that the program originally used to create this forum is currently out of date and unable to be updated; therefore, some features that don't work will not be able to be fixed without entirely re-coding the forum with a new program. And the creators of the site have moved on to other projects so that is not in the foreseeable future. Add in the decline in the popularity of Webkinz as well as the decline in membership here on WI and there is not a lot of incentive to improve the site, I'm afraid. I am just glad that we got the site back after the crash over the summer and there are still some active members to keep it going!

Re: Updating vBulletin?

It's not just a simple matter of updating the site. There is a LOT more involved than that.
Firstly, we would need a programmer who would charge us somewhere in the near vicinity of about 20 - 65000 depending on how much of this stuff has to be updated and by the looks of it, it is a massive undertaking. We are looking at back-ups and updating each version and moving forward to the next version. I am pretty sure that vBulletin requires you to update each version so you aren't missing any crucial security updates and so your forum keeps running smoothly.
We are talking hours and hours of moving stuff, saving stuff, reprogramming all of the threads and lots of other really technical stuff.
At this point none of us has the resources to do this.
