Don't forget about the "New Posts" button which is already in place under your welcome in the left hand corner... it shows threads that have new posts/active threads.
Also, I think the forum separation is fine as is..it may not be fully utilized, but the organization is there for anyone who needs it.
Actually I had forgotton about that. If a 'Hot Topics' link could be added under that link that would provide a similar list but filtered to only show those which had perhaps 10 new posts in the last 24 hours that would be GREAT for keeping up on the latest hot stuff.
But it misses the other part - how popular threads once moved from more general forums to the 'correct' forum that they all but die since few people take (or have) the time to go through all the forums on WI.
Even though some sections on the forum aren't used as much as others, it be very disorganized to merge them. Even though maybe only 20 people use the Webkinz Jr. section, it is good that there is a separate part for that, because it's easier to keep track.
I agree that some of the forums that aren't used all that often could be combined or merged together, but I think that it might start a bit of confusion and "Oh, where did this sub-forum go?!" and "Aw, the thread I posted there is gone!" and things like that.
Hmm..that's an interesting suggestion. I've noticed that with the 'News and Insider Info' section and the 'Special Events' section that seems to happen. The only thing is that the General Discussion section can tend to become a monster section if things don't get thinned out a bit. I know what you mean though. I've seen threads get moved, and then they just fizzle out, or get missed.
I don't know how I feel about your suggestion of having a New section or a Hot section. I have to think about that. I think that maybe the older threads would then be ignored, just like if they were moved into any other section. You know what I mean? Interesting points though.
I'm curious to see what others say.
