Mostly it's new members you see doing this, so they probably have no idea what they're doing. If you see a thread in the wrong place, yes, flag it, but also post on their thread saying somthing like, "I agree with that! Good idea! Just so you know for future reference, this type of thread goes in the ____ section. I flaged a mod to come and move it for you. " I don't think that would cause them much embarrasment, and they probaby would appriciate your comment and help.
Good thread, it really brought up several good ideas

Thanks, everyone... for the support you have shown in this thread for the mod's actions. It can be a tough job, believe me!

I can see both sides of the story. On the one hand, it helps to post "this is in the wrong section" because then everyone can see it and understand. However, sometimes people post that and THEY are the ones that are wrong. We all make mistakes, after all.

On the other hand, some of our members are quite young -- some of them have just learned to read! A teenager might not mind if they were told that their thread was in the wrong place, but it might hurt the feelings of an 8 year old. Since you don't know the age of the member, you have to assume that member COULD be very young.

I think the bottom line lesson here is to always be as nice as you can if you are correcting someone. No one likes to be told that they did something wrong, so the best thing is to do so gently.

I think the most polite way to handle this would be by saying, "This thread is in the wrong area of the Forum, but don't worry, I'll just flag it and a moderator will move it for you. But in the future, threads like this would go under (area appropriate)." or something like that. That way it's telling them that they've made a little mistake, but also telling them what to do next time, so they don't feel bad and it doesn't happen again.

Exactly, JacksMom! We all have to be aware that we're not all on the same level, some of us are 7 or 8 years old, while others are teens, mothers, or even grandmothers! So we need to be kind and gentle to everyone, since we don't know who they are or how old they are. Plus, who wants their feelings to be hurt over a little thing?

I completley agree. Such as my little sister if she were to join to get a message may hurt her feelings. But of course my little sister is to busy playing with her webkinz online and offline to come on a forum..

I don't agree. Red Flags are for reporting something/closing a thread. Just saying that it belongs isn't embarrassing anyone, it is just letting them know that they made a mistake. I don't find it embarrassing at all....

Yeah I agree with you. They should just flag it, Its not their responsibility to take care of, its the mod's responsibility.

It might be embarassing but that's why we have mods. To help us fix mistakes and make us feel safer. And it's not mean. The person that was asked to ask a mod to move it may be embarassed in real life, but on here, noone rarly gets embarassed.
