I believe that in order for people to be able to understand you, you must write clearly, but unfortunately, we do not always have time. Here are some shorthands that are always acceptable:
"u" in place of "you"
"ur" in place of "your"
"2" in place of "to"
"4" in place of "for"
However, there are some exceptions. For example, "2" may be used in place of "to", but not in place of "too".
Also, whenever using these shorthand, you must use them without excess, in moderation. Or, for the not so wordy, don't use 'em too(not 2) much.
This is what a good shorthand sentence looks like:
LOL, I luv ur sense of humor.
This is what excessive shorthand looks like:
LOL, I luv ur sense of humor. U r 2 funny, 2 funny 4 me 2 bear. I'm gtg, brb.
Now we come to nicknames. Nicknames are very useful, because some users have extremely long names, and others have short names with lots of numbers after it. Hereis the best way to nickname.
Short names with numbers after it
Nobody wants to copy a bunch of numbers, so must users will understand who you are talking to as long as you make yourself clear. For example, as long as there isn't another person with a similar username on the thread, you could call this person bobijoe.
That person probably doesn't expect everyone to copy it out, so a good nickname would mr.fergilicious.
LOL, a more eloquent internet jargon shorthand guide, I have never seen. I too am irked by the seemingly "interchangability" (is that a word? it is now!) people seem to think comes along with the words two, to, and too...they're (not their, or there...) all different, and should be used as such.
Thanks for the great guide! Sometimes, people over-shorten things, and it becomes a jumble of letters/numbers, which is even harder to read than if it was just typed out....I am not one for abbreviations, but I can see why some people like to use them.
