Oh wow!!!! I didn't know that reps were such a big deal, being new and all. I have been giving out reps all day like candy
I haven't been giving it to everyone who replies, just to the thread started if I liked the thread.
After reading all of the replies here, IMO, unless reps are a contest, then people should be able to give them how they want. Maybe there could be a way to turn off only your reps and that could be a sign to others. If you don't want reps given to you, you don't give reps to others. Any special message you want to give someone could be handled in a PM.
But again, I'm just a newbie and it's only my opinion.
I'm going to have to *politely* disagree with that.
I like to welcome new users by giving them a rep. If I was in their spot it would make me feel welcome I usually do this, but I don't go around throwing random reps to people. If I really like someone on WI, I will give them reps because they're so good, but I don't give people reps for like, telling something like so-and-so-celebrity just hooked up with so-and-so-celebrity and they're getting married or whatever
I don't give rep points often but when I do I like to write something special (usually to put a smile on their faces). Rep points are a kind of thank you note so it should always be specific to the person and heartfelt.
I don't think that the WI staff should look over every rep point that has been given. I think it would be way too much work and I don't think there is a real need for it. I don't think people should give rep for the first posts but I do think people should give rep for help, good advice, making people avvies or siggys, or just being very nice!
Well said. .....I will admit to giving a fluff-rep....I turn the gray-Rep Box of new members, to Green. (That first box only requires one Rep Point....and makes the new person feel like part of the WI Family.)
I tend to try to find a reason to give someone with a gray box a rep point. I look through all of their posts to try to find something deserving, and sometimes, I just give it to them.
I remember the first time I noticed my little gray box had turned to green. It was one of the most exciting times on WI. In fact, it very well have could have been the most exciting time of all.
And now, I really wish I remembered who gave me that rep point. I would love to go and thank them.
