I'm glad I ran upon this thread, I was wondering about this topic , but I have learned from past experiences that this can become a very heated topic and there are certain arenas where these discussions are nort socially acceptable. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech. All you young whippersnappers will learn this eventually too. We "seasoned " people had to learn it on our own, lol.
But, this site has NOT been without political advertising. I noticed an ad on the left margin to sign up to vote and it carried one candidate's name on it. This was in the past month.
Blocking ads is extremely difficult and time-consuming. We only block them if they are inappropriate.
Religious talk/siggies/avvies are allowed as long as they are respectful. Religious debate is not allowed. It's okay to state your opinion or belief; it's not ok to slam people for different beliefs or to try to change their belief.
Lucky summed up the reasons for no political talk quite well. It's very divisive, in general, and this is a very heated election. It's easy for people to say things now that they might regret later.
Also, keep in mind that we have a lot of members from Canada and other countries. WI is international and the politics of one country shouldn't dominate the conversation online.
How come religion talk/siggies/avvies are allowed (even if respectful) if political ones are not? If one is allowed to state personal religious beliefs and opinions why not political? Just personal opinion - but I think religion is a lot more divisive than politics. Just not a topic that I think should be allowed here either -- think of how many religions there are -- how many people are offended by religion and how many wars, etc. are started over such topic.
