I've thought this before, but lets look at it from the other viewpoint
In 20 years from now, WI might not be here. You might not remember everything about it. Chances are, though, that you will remember it was a fun pastime. That you had friends here. That you enjoyed it. Not everything is about doing something productive you know
It's just the same: You won't remember all your real-life friends. Will you still know you had a fun time? Yes. Will you remember that your talking and playing with them was worth it? Yes.
Sometimes we just need fun things in life
I understand what your saying, and I know it's sort of bad to sit in front of the computer all day (hehehe.. I do :/) but it's still fun. I find WI and WW a form of entertainment, just like some people find drawing, or painting, or soccer, or chess, or card games.
You got it?
Thanks for the great thread which lets us voice our opinions

For alot of people; this can really open their eyes. They can notice everything going on around them! That their lives are passing by, and passing by quick. You have one life to live, let's not spend our lives infront of a computer.

Or other items that i fought in the trading room for. (not literally) I try not to buy to many prodcuts cause it doesn't mean i have more fun when i spend the money, and frankly, it's not wise. I'm not nagging on anybody for buying webkinz or anything just stating what works for me.

Someday I know I'm gonna stop coming (Like a long long long time from now LOL) but it doesn't mean that my time was wasted. I had fun, I helped people, I recieved help, and all in all it's a really great place to be even if someday I grow out of it

The only thing that matters is you had fun on WI. Also your friends that you made. I don't really think it matters how popular or how many pets you have, no. Yes I would get a bit angry after all the hard work put into my account if WI closed someday, but I still had fun and lots of memories. Good thread though. Gets people thinking.
I remember when this game I really liked, called VMK, closed. So many people got so angry about it and about how long they worked on their account.(Ok, maybe I cared a little...) I just cared about the fun times I had.
Now, I would get mad if WW closed. After all that money I spent on it.

i dont remember what i was doing 20 yrs ago, exactly. i have a general idea but i am confident that the things i was doing and the things that were around me are directly responsible for who i am today.
in another 20 yrs ago, i won't remember everything that i posted or everything that i read but i will have the memories. i am not spending my time here thinking of my status. i am spending my time here, enjoying it, helping others and even learning things. in 20 yrs, my memory of WI/WW will be enjoyable and usually time well spent. so, yes, it does matter and it will matter in 20 yrs.
that said, if one's time spent on WI and WW is all about status, your memories will be of competing and how well you did or did not do for your status. the memories might not be so good. i believe that is the true point of that poster: "Stop worrying about status, stop trying to impress others. Just be yourself and enjoy your time so in 20 yrs from now, you don't regret letting life slip you by".
P.S. backflip, please do try to remember that not everybody is capable of going outside and doing things elsewhere. some people spend more time at home bc they like to and others spend time at home bc they have to do so. in addition, there's no way of knowing if a person is on WI bc they are addressing any communication problems that they may have.
This comment: "You have one life to live, let's not spend our lives infront of a computer" could be hurtful bc it is judgemental, implies that the person is wasting their time on the computer and should find better things to do.
I leave for a FEW hours and this is what I get!
Wow, it would take me FOREVER to reply to all these quotes individualy, but I'd like to thank all of you guys for taking your time to post here!
Hmm..well, you've brought up a good point. I mean, yeah, in 20 years, we may either still be hooked on WW/WI or we might not be. (I believe the majority of us will let this go sooner or later, but you never know.) And, it will be hard letting go of all the posts/reps/friends I've made over the course of my activeness on here. But, it has to be done someday.
I believe that if you spend too much time on here, yes, it would be harder, and yes, you should spread out more. I try to spend a nice amount of time here, but then I also put aside time to just be with myself with a good book or excersizing, spending time with my friends. For somebody who spends every minute on here..well..maybe you should get out more.
I don't think that you are 'wasting' time on here, though. If you enjoy WW/WI, you're not wasting anything. For the moment, you love going online and visiting friends. Maybe..in a year or two, you might not. And if you look back, you might think that you watsed your time and could have been doing bigger and better things. But, I think as long as you're having fun, you're not wasting time.
As others, I bet, have already said, playing is a form of learning. And, you don't just do nothing on here. You interact with friends, give advice, and get advice. You make somebody feel better if they're having a bad day, which means the world. So, you're 'spending' time here. I wouldn't say 'wasting', though. But this made me think, also. You brought up a good topic!
P.S. Over time, everybody will grow out of things then look back and question why they ever did something. Not just any particular thing. I think it's just how life goes, how you grow up more and more and mature.
I like to view WI as a learning experience. Online I have learned to interact with others, write better (still working on it, though) and more intellectually, etc. One day I will leave the site, and bringing along with me the things I have learned, which I can use later in life. True, it won't matter how you looked, but it certainly will matter if you spent you're time productively, doing activities that nourish your mental well-being and development.
Well, I see your point but here's how I look at it- never regret doing something if it made you happy. If you enjoy sitting on your computer, chatting with friends on WI, then you should never ever regret doing that! Life's to short to live with regrets.
Wow! This really opened my eyes, dot, thanks for posting this! When we're ready to leave, we'll be flushing all that work down the drain, and if we're obsessed with rep and posts, it'll be worse to leave it all behind.
Dotdotdot, although I agree with your teacher's poster, I sure don't agree with the way you saw your time on WW and WI in your first post. No, you didn't waste your time here just having fun. You did much more than that. Playing is a way of learning, and having fun just means that you enjoyed yourself while you learned. You grew and matured, you learned and helped many others to learn things. Your kind words impacted others in ways that you cannot imagine: perhaps you made an unhappy person feel better one day, or helped someone feel less frustrated. You became a Gift Guru, and this requires discipline and persistence, organisation and also kindness and empathy with your fellow traders. Oh yes, every minute here was well spent. If and when (if ever) you put away your Webkinz and stop posting on WI, you can feel good about the time you spent here. It wasn't wasted at all.
You took the words right out of my mouth DDD, you really make it sound like you regret what you have done on WI...I hope that isn't the case. Just think, I would probably not be here if it wasn't for you...you were the first person that would talk to me, the first person that would wonder when I didn't log on for days at a time. I guess what I'm saying is that you did do something that mattered. Besides, think about the humane aspect of things. Who will really care about post and rep when they are old and weak...but then again, who will care about that toy that they wanted for a whole year and finally got for Christmas(then gave it away a year later, they outgrew it). Everything you do or get is worth something, is still an accomplishment...but really, most material things will not matter in the long run. So just think about the people you have helped, the things you have done, and you will see you didn't waste a second here. (But seriously, stay LOL)
I know your right... And It makes total sense.. but I don't wast time on here trying to get the most rep points, I'm talking to people who can relate to me and share the same interests.. Unlike at school.
