I just got into Webkinz Insider today, as usual with Flash disabled as a precaution. When I clicked on the Forum I still got a "pop-up" Ad displaying a Windows like notice, stating that "Virus Shield" had caught three viruses which it lists. This notice looks like AVG, but is not AVG. It request you to Click OK.
DO NOT CLICK OKAY. This will send you to a site where you will be infected with a virus.
I tried to get a screen grab of this, but my screen grab program froze. Use Ctrl+ALT+Del. to bring up program manager and close iexplore.exe process. Then delete the cache.
I DO indeed have my Pop-Up Blocker enabled, but on checking it, it is set to "Custom". Hmm, I re-selected settings and put it on "Hi". Block all cookies.
Beware these False Pop-Up Virus Program notices here... (They are being injected here by WI advertisers...)
Sheesh...didn't we just go through about of this a while ago?? You are SO right, do NOT click even if it looks like it might be the right thing to do because, even though it says that your 'registry is infected and needs cleaning' it WILL inject a virus. I agree that it is carried on the advertisements and not WI, itself, though.
If I use Firefox, I use an ad blocker... I had several notices from my antivirus security telling me of trojan attempts whenever using the Google Chrome or Safari browsers...
I know it is from the ads, because i do not get that warning of the blocked attempts on firefox (with the ad blocking)..
Unfortunately, the software we use for the front page was deemed "End of Life" some months ago and the company producing the software is no longer updating the code with security updates. As such, some malicious person is using a security hole in the front page software to insert code into some of the articles.
I have identified the security hole and patched it. Although it has been fixed, it highlights an important issue that needs to be addressed. As a long term solution, we will be converting to a different CMS that is still in development and will continue to provide security fixes. Unfortunately, this is a difficult transition and may take a few weeks to complete.
We'd like to stress that what is happening is in no way affiliated with WI, or any of its advertisers, and if we can identify the culprit, there will be legal consequences.
