Does anyone find the idea a bit far-fetched?
How would you be able to make a running clock that continued to work all the time?
Would it keep running during all posts, or would it be frozen in time once a page had loaded?
How do you make options and settings that people can customize to make a more "personal" clock?
"Does anyone find the idea a bit far-fetched?"
--I think maybe the graphics could make the site load a lil slower, but in order to perfect everything to make everything the best it could be, it IS possible.

"How would you be able to make a running clock that continued to work all the time?"
--Very good idea. Atomic clocks are best, but, hey, if they can keep track of our post count then THIS would be no problem

"Would it keep running during all posts, or would it be frozen once a page had loaded?"
--Again, an atomic clock would do this, however I'm not sure atomic clocks are for computers, LOL.

"How do you make options and settings that people can customize to make a more "personal" clock?"
--I think that would have to come AFTER. First, we should focus on getting the clock there.

It is possible, but not very easy to do.

It would be based on the server's clock, and would display differently based on each user's time zone selection.

It would be frozen in time once a page had loaded.. Most people only stay on a page for less than a minute, so it wouldn't be much of an issue.

I'm afraid that's next to impossible. What this would be is a text display of the user's current time, creating a graphical clock that would be automated based on that person's time zone is next to impossible, though it is a cool idea!

Nope, not saying that... It can be done, but it would be pretty much like what you see at the bottom where it says "The time is now ....."

I don't think this is the best idea. It is a good idea, but some people don't want that much info given out. one day you slip your name.. then the time zone (the clock u r suggsting) an event u are going to.. etc. then you have a general location of where you live.

Its a Good Idea...But I have to Agree with Justin & CGrocks-

Some people wouldn't want to give out that info...it might make them feel uncomfortable

And like Justin Said, Its Sort of like the clock already on the forum.....plus I think adding the feature could just make the forum run slower

I just don't think it is worth all the effort. Justin has posted many obstacles to clear, and I just don't think it would be worth it.

What I meant was that it would look like the clock down there, as in.. it would be only text but would say "User Local Time: 6:21 PM" or something like that. It wouldn't make the forum any slower, though.

How much information does it take to pinpoint the location of someone?

I think that knowing someone's time zone would not help a person know where you live. For example, the Eastern Standard Time Zone has 20 different states located in it, plus multiple Canadian Provinces.

Seeing that the continental US is divided into 4 (5? - Atlantic Standard Time?) different time zones, you are just narrowing down the number of places the person can live by 1/4 of the US. And seeing the area of the US is about 3,537,441 square miles, you have a section of land approximately 884,360 square miles large to find the person in!

And that's only in the US!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did some calculations, and found the area of Canada in the EST Zone is more than 1 million square miles, so if you add that to the US area, the Eastern Time Zone in the US and Canada takes up about 2 million square miles of land!
Have fun finding someone in that!
