I would love that to be an emoticon! That would be really cool! I hope Justin can do it.

Thousands of Christians were martyred during Nero's rule and this sign is of Nero representing his vision. A vision of hate and perversion, a mocking of Christianity. I understand that many may not be aware of its true meaning. Since over history it has become many things to many people, interpreted in many different ways. It has been argued and hotly debated for a very long time what it really stands for. Over the course of time it has been used and displayed in various ways. Some examples being; From Satanists to Hitler's troops to the sought after revolution in the 1960's flaunted as the "peace symbol" for nuclear disarmament to name a few.
Actually, it started as the symbol of a British group calling themselves the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It is not an inverted cross, but rather the semaphore flags for N and D overlaid and then put into a circle. Here you can even find a BBC News report about the 50th anniversary of the symbol which explains it's origins.

I can find no reputable indications that the peace symbol is based on Nero's Cross. If you could please provide references, I will look into them.

I wish that would happen! You could use it if you got in an arguement to make peace or something.

I personally don't like the peace sign as it reminds me of a broken cross and being a Christian it doesn't sit right with me.

Just my opinion.

As a Christian myself, I support nuclear disarmament. As stated above, the symbol's origins are there.

I find more in common between the characters 'n' and 'h' than I do an inverted, broken cross and the peace symbol. That doesh't meah tnat tne two symbols are ihterchahgable.

Thanks so much for this post, and for the link to this image:

I also have been researching the Peace Symbol origins. I'm a librarian by trade... research is what I do, and most of the reputable sources I've looked at don't mention the Nero's Cross. Those that do mention it suggest that it is an urban legend. (See: Peace: The Biography of a Symbol by Ken Kolsbun for an in depth study of the peace symbol and how it has been used since its incarnation in the fifties.)

Here is an article from History Today (full citation: History Today, April 2008 v58 i4 p4(2)
CND: the story of a peace movement: Sue Donnelly introduces the archives of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, 50 years old this spring, and a project make them accessible to a wider audience. Sue Donnelly.

Quote:
The 1958 march saw the launch of CND's distinctive logo. It was produced by Gerald Holtom, a graduate of the Royal College of Art who had been a conscientious objector during the Second World War. The logo was unveiled at the offices of Peace News in February 1958. Holtom explained that the symbol incorporated the semaphore letters N(uclear) and D(isarmament), though he later explained the design also had a more personal origin.

'I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palms outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya's peasant before the firing squad. I formalized the drawing into a line and put a circle round it.'

Five hundred cardboard lollipop-stick placards were produced for the march, half using black on white and half using white on green so that throughout the weekend the colours on display would change from 'Winter to Spring, from Death to Life'.

Holtom's simple image has proved extremely versatile and has been adapted to represent numerous campaigns and special-interest groups, from Christian CND to CND Cymru.
I know that there are many other symbols for peace, but Doves and Olive Branches -- while lovely -- have a significant religious background. What I like about Gerald Holtom's symbol is that it is secular. It does not draw from any religious symbolism at all. It is not anti-Christian, merely anti-war.

One thought on this... This is a Peace Project, and I hate to start it on a note of discord. Would it work for you if the Peace Pledge had two symbols? The one that July & I proposed, and an alternative dove for those who don't wish to display that symbol?

I think duo symbols would be a great idea, Hmm. Then members could choose how to express their pledge of peace.

Choice is always good, so having more than one symbol would give everyone the opportunity to use the one they are more comfortable with and that way everyone wins.
