Dixiecup,I say rep point too for you. What you just said was so well put.Every little word you said I could agree with.I really am surprised that nobody has gotten into a fight about this. However I do think "no offense" can be taken in a wrong and right way.Thats just my full opinion. It's not a fact.
Cuteforpup, thank you so much! It is such an unusual thread and a good topic for discussion. The fact that people aren't coming in here 'guns a-blazing' shows that as a community, we have a lot of respect for each other. Sometimes we just need a gentle 'nudge' from our contemporaries to remind us that no one here is the enemy. This thread does that nicely, politely and pleasantly. Thank you for posting it, Cheekycatlover.
Uhm, I'm not really sure. Maybe a little bit of both. Some people are using it wrong and being kind of rude, but then others just don't want people to take it to the heart. Sometimes I will be veiwing a thread and the second post is something like, "No offense, but...No offense, no offense!" It's weird...I'm not very sure about this one!
urmmm, idk, i mean sometimes i use no offense so people wont think im trying to hurt there feelings and im really just giving my opinion. some people do use it the wrong way, but i dont know. its a touchy subject.
I don't think that it makes it worse, but I agree that to some people, it will make them get all defensive and they will be looking in your post for something to go hysterical for. Certainly I would take it like : This person has something that she is going to say to me that may not be the nicest thing in the world. I hope I don't take it the wrong way, and think that this person is trying to be mean to me. Her using that in it shows me she is not going to say something the nicest and that she is trying not to be mean to me, and her opinion is something I might not like.
Just my two cents.
Yeah, but you have to admit that sometimes a person will take offense whether that pre-cursor is there or not. Some people come on when they are in a bad mood and something just rubs them the wrong way and they are off on a tangent. It just happens, we all have days when we are less than patient, I am sure. It could be they take something personally when in reality the person they are upset with doesn't even know them.
Something else to keep in mind: People's communication skills vary for a wide variety of reasons, and sometimes "no offense" is just the very best way a person can express their desire to not hurt someone's feelings.
Sometimes, people who use "no offense", may indeed be trying to be respectful before offering their opinion--and that's they best way they know how.
