That's an interesting idea...except isn't the idea with rep that no one really know how much the boxes represent?
True and we still wouldn't have to know. I'm not sure how it would work but maybe a system could keep track and automatically update it when you get to a certain amount. Still keeping the amount unknown.
I definitely agree with giving an alternative status to those who won't be participating in the GE.

Might this not encourage "useless" rep, though? I know it's a common issue when rep is given out for no reason; I could see a pair of friends possibly rep-spamming in order to get the required amount. Probably 5 of my 7 (maybe 6? Really, don't check rep too often) rep bars came from when I posted in the Rumor Mill for a couple of months. When giving helpful answers in the forums, someone may not get as many rep points as those who do Rumors, or vice-versa. It could really turn reputation into a competition or encourage rep-spamming IMHO. It might make "comparing" people by their amount of rep bars more common, when in reality, your amount of rep bars does not make you a better/worse member.
