ok im going to attempt to give you rep for being so honest. i didnt know either and well was afraid to admit that. but if i think about that THIS is the place to admit what you know and dont know.

anyway to answer the question of the thread i dont think its about popularity, i WAS using my daughters account (realized i use WI more than her and made my own account lol) but i guess i never really knew what rep was or how to give it. i will be honest the FIRST rep i gave (including her account) was tonight to someone asking why people get mad at them for trying to help them out by (nicely) letting them know they broke a rule. to make a long story short someone PMed me letting me know it was against the rules to post your age then PMed me saying sorry because over 18 can post age. if i had known what rep was i would have given it to them for helping.

Default Re: This just doesn't make sense to me. I think Rep Boxes should be taken away.

I wish that I could give rep for some of the PM's I have gotten. A few times when I was feeling a bit low, I would get people from my contact list that would just send me a 'Chin up' letter and that would just make my day!
I like the little green boxes, I am particularly fond of the boxes on FIA's and Justin's. THOSE ones show me how much they are appreciated for all of their HARD work. A few of the other Adminstrators and moderators have them as well.
You have to realize, also, that a vast majority of the people who HAVE the full set of boxes also have contributed a great deal to the site or have been here a lot longer than we have.
Look at 8Dance4Eva10, she has been with Webkinz Insider since June of 2007. She is one of the first 1000 or so people who helped to make this site what it is! She has a couple of stickies, one just happens to be about this VERY topic and she did a LOT of work to get it put up there. Justin and Wendy recognize hard work and this is just one of those little benefits that kinda just lifts your spirits when you get one. Some of the things people say in the posts are so kind that all you want to do is rep them back. I usually go to their profile page and acknowledge that I appreciate their thoughtfulness.
Here, check out 8dance4eva10's wonderful guide on Rep points! You might appreciate the green boxes a bit more!

I don't think that rep is necessarily a popularity contest, but now that we can see the boxes people are trying way too hard to get rep. Every day there are multiple help threads, suggestion threads, how to be a good member threads, tips for making good posts threads, and even tips for rep threads. Sure a few of them really are just people trying to be helpful, but 90% of those threads are created by people hoping to get rep for them. I'd love to go back to the days when you could see the rep you received but other people couldn't. Recently, rep has become more about how many boxes someone has and less about genuinely helping people just to help them.

This is going to sound goofy but I don't even know what the rep boxes look like! Are they the gray kind of oriental looking figures just below the picture or are they the little green rectangles. I also don't know how to give rep to someone when they are helpful. I've been coming here for a long time but I'm usually more of an observer than a participant. I guess if I ever want understand how all this works, I better step up and speak up. My name is Grannykinz so thats a good clue that I am not a child.I started all these Webkinz activities to help my little grandson and now he is beginning to lose interest and move on to car racing and sports with his Nintendo ds and his Wii. But his old Grannykinz is now addicted to all things Webkinz!!!!!!

It's not a "popularity" contest. I have NEVER gotten rep pts for someone saying, "hey, i like you". it's always been, "thank you for helping with X". either everybody hates me or the rep pts are only/mainly being given out correctly.

---------- RedBear added 3 Minutes and 50 Seconds later ----------

when it was a "secret", hardly anybody gave out the comments. either people forgot about them or they just didn't think anyone would notice and/or that it mattered. i am the same now as i was when we had rep boxes, then we had them taken away, and now when they returned. the amount of rep comments that i got when they were not visible to others was pretty much non-existent. it's not that *I* changed, its that the rep comments were often forgotten. so no, i like the rep boxes bc it makes me when i know that i helped someone with something. many of the comments come from people who have not posted on the thread. i think that it's their way of thanking without having to post or PM.

also, 99% of the time, i will give them out if someone helps me and/or if someone has a really good and/or useful post (sometimes i do forget, though. i will admit that i was guilty of forgetting often when they were hidden). i have also been known to give them out if someone makes me laugh. i have never given them out just bc i want someone to look "popular". if i did, my closest WI friend would have a lot more rep pts .

That is how the reputation program here on WI was treated before it was taken away some time ago. Back then, we they were called 'Thankz pointz' and it was automatically show under our usernames how many rep points we had. Then people really started treating them like a popularity contest... so they got taken away. Now, we have them back, but nobody (not even yourself) knows how many reputation points you have... we don't know how many points are needed per box either, only Justin and Wendy know. This is to prevent posts like 'I only need 3 more rep points until I get my first yellow box! PLEASE help!'.

I never really pay attention to the rep boxes.... I don't mind them.

I just joined. I have given rep. But i thought that what i wrote only that person would aver read. I thought rep was a way of saying "thank you" , "nice job" or "i totally agree". I have never thought this was a popularity contest. Guess i was confused, thought it was all about appeciation. Thought to ponder?

Thank you Webkinz0415, You have hit the nail on the head. That was the primary reason for giving out Reputation. It was so that people could see who was knowledgeable, honest and caring. I hope I hadn't missed those crucial points in my original post. Only YOU, yourself can see what people have said in the thankz or reputation points. I liken it to a scrapbook, myself. It is something that I can look back on when I am feeling a bit down. I am glad we have it here. For others to treat it as a race to see who gets to the finish, they are only going to find it is a LONG painful journey, because there is only one way to get the reputation HONESTLY and that is through hard work. Any other path would make you look like a phoney.

I agree that they do seem to be a popularity contest. I have seen at least two different times that someone has posted and has not even gotten a single reply. Then, within a short period of time, someone else posts something very similar and not only do they get upwards of 50 replies, they are also getting rep points like crazy. I don't want to say that that person doesn't deserve them so much as why didn't the first person get even a comment? I know its suppose to be a way of being nice, but it does seem to be a bit clique-ish. I guess it doesn't really hurt anyone, but for people who are trying to become more involved in the community, you tend to feel shut out if you can't even get a comment back and someone else is getting a dazen reps a post.

Thanks Dixie, for giving me a way to get that off my chest.

---------- boopi added 15 Minutes and 40 Seconds later ----------

Maybe I should clarify myself. If I need specific help, I DO look for the boxes, I DO know that they are important. I was talking about people who post and then get several replies from members saying they're getting rep points and others are virtually ignored for the same subjects posted. I didn't mean to veer away from the topic, I just thought it linked to one of my concerns about the postings.
But, I guess in the end, that is part of being on a forum.
