Here are my thoughts on this. You know how some people never log off? We could tell those who were on from those who weren't, and it would be easier for us, as members of WI, to know that we weren't being ignored, and that the user was simply away. Also, sometimes there are the contests, such as the recent Griffin Rug one, where you have to be on the website at a certain time. Sometimes, you just can't be there no matter what, so if you're in idle you'll at least have a sporting chance of winning.
