Mine was doing that for a while. It turned out it was a newer Windows upate that I had installed that was conflicting with the sound device driver. You need to get a adult (if you are not one) and try to 1. Update to a newer sound device driver, or 2. Restore your computer to an earlier restore point. I had to restore my computer to an earlier restore point about a week back and it did the trick.
Out of curiosity...Is this a Gateway Laptop? I am wondering if this is a known issue. Another option is you might check the support database for the computer manufacturer (Gateway, Dell, whoever makes it and I would try this before you rollback the operating system). Good Luck
