Default How does the counter work in thread views?

Hi, Mods!

Could one of you please explain how the view counter works in the threads? Does the counter increment every time anyone accesses the thread, even multiple times, only when they clear their cache, or only for unique users, or if the same person goes in over and over, maybe once every 24 hours? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks!

When you look at the list of threads in a particular forum or subforum, you will see a column that indicates number of views and number of replies. I'm curious as to how the number of views is incremented. In other words, if you are familiar with website counters, some counters will increase every time you refresh the page; other "smart" counters will indicate the number of UNIQUE visitors to the site within 24 hours. I'm hoping it's the latter in this case, but I would just like to know for sure.

It's as many times anyone has looked at the thread.
This right now would be a view for you.

So, Cleopatra, what you're saying is that if I just closed out and went back into this thread ten times in a row, but no one else in the forum looked at it during that duration, the viewing count would increase by 10? Just want to be sure!

P.S. - I actually tried to do this on purpose in another thread of mine - going in and out 2 or three times and then clearing my cache, leaving the forum, and returning and checking the thread count and it did not increase. This is what prompted my curiosity.

I believe when someone views the thread, it would increase on the Views. I've never tried clearing my cache though.

Ah, I see. So you're not really 100% sure how it works? I appreciate your jumping in to try to help, Cleopatra! I hope someone who knows with absolute certainly how it works will jump in here with an answer. I'm not just curious for the sake of being curious. I actually have a practical reason for wanting to know this, so I'm really hoping to know one way or the other. I understand that when someone views a thread at least for the first time on a given day, the views would certainly increase. But my experimental observations on my own PC with multiple viewings of the same thread have not resulted in increased viewing numbers, so I'm confused when you suggest that anyone viewing a thread at any time should increase the thread count. I hope to understand more of how it works. Thanks for your help, Cleopatra!
