No, that's actually plagiarism (stealing). Think of it just like writing a research paper. You can't leave out the bibliography and say, "No, these are not my ideas, but I'm not going to give credit to the books/ sources". Your paper would get an F. If you're a college student and try that, you would probably be expelled. It's illegal.

It's ok. That's why I made this thread. I think that a lot of people didn't really understand.

The main issue was with the shop owners. They were starting to say that certain graphics that they found were theirs, and anyone who uses them should give them credit. (with no credit given to the original website)

To the shop owners:
If people ask you for the Websites, you must give the sources. No secret sources.

Technically, you didn't actually make them. They are on the internet. They are for everyone. If you want to keep it a secret, make the graphics from scratch and say you made it on Paint/GIMP etc. You aren't required to teach people how, just where.

I have a question though.
What if you lived in a different country that didn't have that law?

You're right. If you make them, they are yours. If you get them from another artist, give them the credit. You don't have to say your own original technique that you use as an artist.

There are international copyright laws. The internet is international. And besides, you wouldn't really want to take another person's work and claim it as your own, right?

I wouldn't.
Why don't people just copyright things then?

Most of the graphics we all find on websites (like Sayclub Dolls for example) are copyrighted. You are given permission to use them when you download them. (if you give credit)

Thank you Desty for taking the time to explain this. Besides the fact that it is usually in the agreement of using the graphics, it is also good manners to point someone in the direction of the graphics you may be using. One day, it could be you getting "word of mouth business" from a user on a site like ours...!

The thing people seem to be missing here is empathy- put yourself in another person's shoes.
You've just taken this really awesome picture of your cat, and you want to share it with everyone. You post it on the internet- on facebook or twitter or ****** or blogger, wherever.
Someone comes along, wants a picture of a cat for this random website you don't even know or care about.
They click on your picture, and save it without a second glance, then go to edit it and add text and even go to the extreme of adding their own name.
Yay, your art's been stolen!

By the way Miss g, Hufflepuff's the way to go. Not Ravenclaw.
