The reputation in itself is pretty neutral. The issues you all are discussing are constructed by us -- i.e the members on the website -- who place a social ideal on the system. The system can be used as a way to simply say a quiet 'thanks', but it can also be used as a popularity system, system of power, etc. That all depends on how we treat it, and how we decide to construct it. Being aware of that is important.

That all being said -- I will remind everyone that we ask members not discuss the reputation system because of this very reason (the issues you have mentioned). I'll leave this thread open for now, but if it sways too far into the system itself and trying to 'figure it all out' to earn more badges, bars, etc. I (or another staff member) will close it.
I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to cause any tension or anything between members to "try and figure out how the rep system works", or to cause a negative environment.
I didn't share my theory in order for people to try and gain themselves more rep, but more so so that people could understand why people are gaining badges faster than they did in 2010.

Oh no, that's fine. I appreciate the clarity you were trying to bring to the issue. I was just pointing out (or trying to ) that the reason we don't allow that kind of conversation is because it does create a focus on badges/bars and not on the kind comments members provide.

It also depends how many posts you have too, there are new members that may have more posts than me. Which is fine, but usually I would think it is a helpful post, but I always forget to add rep. However the post on one of my polls I usually just add rep there.
I personally think there is no problem with the rep.
