This is a little bit unrelated, but I think that parental permission to dismiss features, under 18, is unnecessary. I think that the rules stating that anyone above 13 can make their own decisions is perfectly true, because I would most likely not be posting this if I had to have parental permission. Because they are adults doesn't mean they make the wisest decisions all the time.

Teenagers can make very good choices, and you're right, adults don't always necessarily make the wisest decisions. Personally, I made some AWFUL decisions when I was a teenager... Then again, I've made some awful decisions as an adult, so maybe I'm not the best example. lol

MOST adults are only trying to do what's best for their children. Not ALL adults have their children's interests in mind, and not ALL parents who HAVE good intentions will make the right decisions. But it's still wise to listen to the advice of adults, even if you DO think you're old enough to make your own decisions.

I'm an adult, with a daughter of my own, and I still try to listen and follow the advice of people who are older than me. They've lived through more than I have, and many times, they're wiser than I am. In fact, the biggest mistakes I've made in my life are those time when I knew what my parents/older friends thought and advised, and did my own thing anyway.

Oh, sorry, I guess that was also unrelated to this thread.

Does anyone else have a reason NOT to have some sort of gender symbol? I think we have covered the ones previously mentioned.

I'll give you that, one, monkeecj!

Honestly, I don't even know what the WI rules are for under 18 members, or under 13 members.....And I'm too lazy to check out the FAQ pages to try to find out....

Regardless, it's a moot point, because the rules are in place for a reason: safety of all members.
And safety needs to come before any politically correct thinking or individual preferences or concerns about age discrimination.

As to whether or not gender indications---be they pink and blue smileys, or little stick figures, or a big neon avatar that says, "I'm a girl!", ---should be added to the members' profiles, that really is ultimately up to the WI staff.

You sure did start a neat discussion, though!
I've been following it off and on since this morning! And if I didn't already give you a rep point, I'd be doing it right now!

Nope, not me.

But if my gender symbol has gray hair and orthopedic shoes, I'm outta here!

Well, I don't see the big deal if they were shown previously. I guess it is up to the person to disclose the information on their gender. When referring to someone I just do: (s)he, or even just use "they". Sometimes you can guess by the avatar & username. So thats my stand on it!

I don't really think it is necessary. Out owners pay for this site out of their own money, and to my understanding, the more features, the more it costs. (please correct me if I am wrong) I always just type s/he or something, and it does not take much extra effort.
