I've received some REP that says, "I was just giving out random REP!" i really don't want that rep! I don't deserve it, i was wondering if maybe they could try and just look through REP, just maybe scan it quickly? This DOES sound like a big job, so I doubt it possible, But I thought I'd still bring it to member's attention. So if you give out random REP, please stop. It could give people the wrong idea about others!
I agree!!! Rep shouldn't just be handed out, that defeats the whole purpose of it. If rep is just handed out, there will be no point to it. Rep would then have to be stopped. For everyone out there that is giving random rep, please stop. You may have thought you were just being nice, but it actually does the opposite. Please stop handing out rep randomly. Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention, soccergolly! Keep rep in control, and have have a great day!
I definetely agree with you! I haven't gotten random rep, but I know it must have happened. If I got some, I really wouldn't appreciate it that much, because I didn't earn it! So people who do random rep, please stop!
lol i did make a thread like this. *sigh* most of the feed back was disagreeing with me. it was labeled'REP OVER-VEIWING' lol. and i learned that it would honestly be too big a job. at first it seemed a great idea. and i was excited to share it with WI. But then as i read the posts i realized that after EVERYTING WI has done, it would honestly, (like babie12 said)be too big a job. i mean think of the nicest person you know. they get lots of rep. and wi would have to go over everyone. i know its not right for users to give out random rep. but instead of asking WI to do such a large task, instead, reply to the person that sent you the rep, and simply say, "Thank you for your rep, but may I ask if you not give out random rep again. You may think that this makes people feel good, but instead they are giulty because they didn't really deserve it." and that is what I would do. Rep for this thread, because we share the same interest in how important rep really is
LOL How can you not want a rep point... I never get random rep points!
Different people just have different philosophies on how rep is given out. I'm so stingy it hurts sometimes. But the random rep giver evens out my stinginess. It's probably a bell curve... most people give reps for those who deserve it when they are helpful (normals)... some people give rep only when the information was spectacular (me-stingies)... some people give rep for nothing at all (randomers).
In the end, the average works out. Those with lots of rep points still deserved it because lots of people: the stingy, the normals and the randomers will give these people rep. Those who are not as helpful will only get the random rep points. Those of us in the middle will get it here and there. We will mostly get our rep from the normals... probably never from a stingy.... yeah, I would never rep myself even if I wasn't myself ... but maybe... by sheer luck may get one from a randomer.
Overall, they really don't affect the rep system. There's not enough of them to affect your status. There are way too many people for that and not enough people doing it.
Just be thankful that someone out there is saying: "Thanks for just being you."
