Compatibility problem with Permalink when using Safari
I've been using the links for a while now and on occasion had trouble with both the permalink and the #<number> post number link. I usually use my mouse to 'Copy Link' and then insert it into a new posting, although at time I follow the link and then copy & paste from the resulting URL.
I think in one case the problem was that the number just happened to be the same as a smiley, so it ended up with asterisks where there should have been a number. At the time I didn't think to disable smileys on the post, so I never did get that link working.
What I would expect the difference to be is that the #<number> would bring you to the Nth post in that thread, while the permalink would be a permanent link (regardless of any deleted posts) to that posting regardless of position within the thread. There seems to be a few other differences though.
Could someone please take the time to clearly describe the differences and any known issues?

Re: What is the difference between Permalink and the other link?
Alright, I did a little more digging and it appears that part of my problems is a compatibility problem with Safari. Some of the anchors aren't working.
If I go to the WI GEV in Safari and click on the link in the index to Rare Items, it just brings up the WI GEV starting at the top. In Firefox it will bring you to the correct section. The same with the example PermaLink I gave above.
I haven't yet figured out what the problem is, the auto-generated pages are a bit complex. Unfortunately I can't just run the normal HTML Validator, it gets a 301 error.
I did bring up Firefox's error console and tried it. I get "Unknown property 'filter'. Declaration dropped." and a lot of warnings about vbrep_register is not defined. The later is most likely because I was not logged in under Firefox.
Still not sure what prevents the permalinks from working in Safari, but it does appear some of my problems are browser specific.
Could someone with an iPhone or iTouch see if the same problems happen under Safari on those devices?

Oops, sorry I missed the question. I'll try to explain.
Using your post above:
The #9 provides a relative link based on the thread. It will take you to the ninth posting in this thread. If the thread or a post above your post gets deleted, it would not bring you to your post. I've noticed it also only shows a single post.
The (permalink) provides a direct link to your post that should work even if a post above your post got deleted. It brings up the whole thread. On Foxfire it will go directly to the post. On Safari, it just brings up the thread the post is in. That would be the compatibility issue that I changed the topic title to point out. I have only tested it on the two browsers named and only on Mac OS 10.5.
In order to get the URL for those two links, you would put your mouse over the link and right click (or control click with a one-button mouse on a Mac) and select Copy Link. Then you could use the link icon to insert the link into your post. When it asks for URL, just paste in the one you just copied.
Does that answer your question?
In case you haven't noticed, the little arrow following a name in a quote is also a link back to the message being quoted. It appears to have the same issues as the permalink.
