Wink Common Courtesy

Hey everyone! I know I have been posting a lot in this section, but it just seems like this needs to be said.

If you ask to be placed on a VM list, of any sort, COMMENT WHEN THERE ARE UPDATES.

I have a story thread, and I love all my readers to death, but some of them never post feedback after I take the time to notify them.

I have a slow computer, and so going to every single profile can get a little tiring, especially when people don't ever reply back.

I have even told my readers in order to be placed on the VM list, you most give me feedback so I know you're still following the thread, and even that didn't change anything.

I can understand if you're busy, but I even see some of them ONLINE and they still don't post.

I gets really discouraging when people stop responding. It even hurts my feelings a little.

My suggestion is simply to be polite and either ask to be taken off the VM/PM list, or comment when an update has been added.

That's all, WI.

Default Re: Small Suggestion for people on VM lists!

Good Evening!
I actually disagree with you, completely.
Some people (like myself) like to be notified when there are updates on threads.
However, they don't comment.
I personally will ask to be on a notification list and NEVER comment but read every update.
It is just how I am.
You shouldn't take it personally because you've written a FANTASTIC story which has tons of views.
Its got over 5000 views and is rated 5 stars so people must be reading it and enjoying it.

Notification lists are something you can choose to do or not to do.
You don't even have to have one.
You could ask everyone to subscribe to your thread if they wish to be notified.
Its up to you.

I'm sorry you aren't getting the comments you want.
But you have gotten A TON of comments.
And on top of that thousands of views and a 5 star rating.
You've gained a status as a great writer of WI and even have some loyal fans that comment every time you update your story.
I'd focus on the good, such as all the fans you have and how much they love your stories or how many views/5 stars you have instead of the negative.

People are reacting to it in a positive way.
I'm not sure if this is the response you quite wanted, but I hope it helps!
Keep up the story writing and don't get discouraged because you're not getting the comments you want.
You sure are getting a lot of views and a positive rating.
Have a great night!

Hello Blythe!
I am very happy that you decided to post such an informative reply and have shared your opinion.

I’m somewhat saddened by the fact that you’ve interpreted this thread in such a way that it makes me appear like I’m taking my readers for granted, because I’m not.

I am incredibly blessed to have such loyal readers, and yes, am extremely thankful to have gotten the views/comments/ratings that I have. I am anything but a pessimist, and always thank my ACTIVE readers. Which is why I am taking those points you have made as irrelevant, because that was never the original purpose for making this thread.

You say that you ask to be placed on multiple VM/PM lists and never comment, BUT you always read the update. How does the author of the thread know that you’re reading the new update? They don’t. And yes, a VM/PM list is optional, but so is this suggestion.

If I take the time to send out notifications, then they can take the time to give me feedback. It’s a mutual courtesy. Mind you, OTHER WI AUTHORS FEEL THE SAME. I am not alone as an individual in this. I am very grateful for your post, as I feel I have now cleared up any misunderstandings. Have a FANTASTIC night.

I believe that this points being made because Hope has people that ASK to be on and it takes a longtime to notify everyone that asks to be on thelist and type up the chapter- and a little feedback would be awesome.

Inmy opinion, it doesnt have to be much just a "Great CHapter!"

Or
"I loved the cliffhanger"

It helps keep the thread open.

I understand what you're saying, and I agree. I think if someone has taken the time to notify me (for instance) about an update, it's only polite to leave a small comment. I think it's just the courteous thing to do, like you said.

I agree with what your saying. I know how you feel, because I have a house thread and when I update it I don't get as many comments I want. Even though I do get rated and have many views. It would just be nice if people complemented the work we put into our threads. I mean I could add a VM list but do those really work?

Hi Runlikethewind,

I'm sorry to hear this is bothering you. VM lists are not a requirement of our CW section, it's just something some authors choose to have as a courtsey to their readers & audience.

Sometimes it is difficult for readers to form a jusitified opinion about something, finding the right words to express how you are feeling about something can be hard! I doubt it is meant to make anyone discouraged about their writing (our writing community is super awesome), but sometimes it can be a mix of all sorts of things to *why* they may not be providing feedback.

One thing that is really cool about this forum software, is that you can get some indirect feedback about your story. You can see how many views it has had, how many replies, and how many stars (rating) it has been given. It may not give a big picture sort of thing, like comments would, but it can help you decide if you wish to continue writing or not.

NOT....that it should matter. Keep writing if you enjoy it, and participate in the community, if you enjoy it. If you are writing to please others, then I would encourage you to find another story or activity to participate on at WI. I really want to see our writers happy & doing what they love~!

It's really kind for you to take the time to VM everyone, but it's not something you have to do. I think awesome writing will always bring people back for more!

We can't force a user to comment on a thread, that is just not fun and defeats the community feeling we like to think WI has. *If they do comment, think of it as really meaningful. *They took time out of their day to do it, it's so nice of them! *If they don't, well that is also their choice & I am sure they mean well.

Long story short, keep writing if you love it. Your love for your story will always draw people in. We don't write a review for every story we read, but we do like to pass on the love we have for that book to our friends. I like to think the CW section works just like that too.

Also, just as a side note to our authors, the VM lists were effected by our rule put in place (#13) which made sure people were not abusing it. We were seeing a lot of comments left simply to acquire a new chapter, and they were turning into chat threads & not feedback about the story. While we like to think it was a positive change (those who comment provide good feedback now), we want to make sure it is recognized that VM lists are not meant to make stories popular or a chat thread.
