Hi, I see your problem has been solved but I would like to tell you about some good browsers.
Google Chrome (as mentioned)-
A very good google browser, where if you dont directly type www. or .com it turns it into a google search, instead of it going to optimum or verizon searches like it might on Internet Explorer. Very simple and easy to use.
Ahh a mac program for windows and macintosh. Safari is very fast. When you open a new tab it automatically has NINE of your most visited sites. Which is usually Mail, A forum, A game or something, A social Networking site, and more. Just for the average person, aha. Safari even has spell check built in, but you can disable that. With a simple design you will never get confused.
I use ie8 and must say... and before that I had ie7 which also worked just fine for me so knocking on wood that I do not have any of the problems that you have experience... because I have tried some of the other browsers and have come back to IE every time. However, live topic occasionally will make my screen flicker, but that's about it. I am glad that your problems seemed to have gone away by changing browsers.
Yes, that only happens to me when I am trying to write my message while someone else is posting-it bumps me up, & I have to refind where I was at in my message. The way that I have found a way around it is I usually click the Go Advanced button on the bottom right, & then my computer is unaffected from a live topic.
Thanks to everyone who suggested Google Chrome. I have been a big fan of google from the start, most of my home pages are google, but I thought the chrome thing was just another add on for IE so I never gave it another glance. I figured it was another toolbar or something that just toook up more of my screen. Got to say I like it, looks like IE's days are numbered.
