I spell things right but on email or myspace, aim, or yahoo I use chat speak, not on here. But I will do brb and lolz or ttyl on here. Those are like jots I guess kind of but idk... I used to do chat speak all the time but I get used to it and next year I will get in trouble if I do chat speak.

Yes I really, think that you should not use text speak, even though in texting I some times I do that! But on WI I do not like it!

Honestly, I think what is not necessarily "ridiculous" but is very sad is that more and more younger people are losing the ability to actually type/write/speak in complete and proper sentences and their spelling is atrocious because they tend to use text speech too often....Honestly, I tend to avoid reading posts using text speech...my feeling is if someone is too lazy to write properly then perhaps what they have to say is not of great importance, especially since most of the text speech lingo is for simple commonly spoken phrases as opposed to a statement of significance....my honest opinion....

As well, it's a recommendation, not a rule...however, if you want what you say to be read by everyone....perhaps using proper English would be the way to go...I mean, would you ever write a resume up using text lingo....or would you write a test at school or essay in text lingo? If you want your voice heard be sure everyone can understand you....that's my motto!
EXACTLY! I can't stanmd the text-speak on WI, and I think people should top writing like that. I mean, how hard is it to type out "Talk to you later" instead of TTYL?

I'm pretty sure it's a guideline--not a rule, but I almost always ignore posts with chatspeak.

Not only can I not stand it--I can't read it, either!! All in all you'll spend the same amount of time if you break it up: let's look at it in an analogy:

Take longer to type non chatspeak : Take shorter to read it :: Take shorter to type chatspeak : Take longer to read it.

See where I'm going? I mean, "LOL" is fine, and an occasional "IDK" or "BTW" is fine, too. But, "0 btw i 4g0t 2 tell u tat i m n0t gunna b 0n 2morr0" is just unreasonable!

I know that mostly it's the younger members who have grown up with that or have spelling difficulties and I can appreciate that but it IS harder to read.

Am I your daughter? That's how I text. My mom abbreviates and I type it out. Odd.

But I do prefer non text talk.

It may not be a reportable offense, but it is considered to be rude. I am not that fond of text-speak, abbreviated speech or Chat-speak. I do use LOL, but I think it is quite common, even in everyday 'slang' usage. As a matter of fact, I have even heard the word 'ROFFLE' is now considered a real word borrowed from the language created by the internet. (ROFL means Rolling on the floor laughing). We may have to accept changes in the language along the road of progress, but it certainly doesn't mean that we have to adopt the usage. I very seldom hear the word 'Doh' being used in everyday language even though it is now considered an actual word in the dictionary. It could be just a passing fancy, it may be here to stay. I understand most of it, but I do appreciate when people write in full sentences, especially when something needs to be explained in detail.
I am pretty sure that it is on Gingerly's list of DO NOT's when looking toward becoming a gift trainee. I think that is ALSO why we have a ten letter rule on all posts.
I think it is more of a common courtesy than a rule.

There is a difference between an informal and formal setting when it comes to speech and grammatical practice. WI is the equivalent of chatting on the phone with your friend...you want to be understood, but it's ok to use some slang. The key is moderation. We're not writing our dissertations here, so it's pretty silly to get too uptight about slang and short hand. Considering the number of kids who chat here, I'm surprised at how well spoken most of them are (not to be condescending). I'm surprised there isn't much more netspeak, given the demographic. Seems pretty balanced, all in all.

I for one only type like that when I am in a hurry or joking, like boxorz, pwnd, etc. However, I as a teen use text speak for convenience only. It is everyone's choice how they want to talk, so you just have to put up with it.

The purpose of writing is to communicate. Given that basic fact, it makes sense for the writer to ensure the message can be understood by the audience. If one is writing in a journal, then "textspeak" makes sense since the audience is the author. Anywhere else, it only makes sense to write in standard English (or whatever language a speaker's audience understands). Doing less essentially tells the reader that the author doesn't care if he or she is actually understood!

Yes, I'm old school. I think technology is wonderful and has its place. But textspeak developed so people could type on a phone quickly and communicate with ONE person some basic information such as where to meet. WI is a community with many many people in the audience.

This doesn't mean we set the grammar police loose! It's a great place for kids to practice composing messages in a safe setting. It's a great place for English-as-a-second language individuals to practice communicating in English. Which is yet another reason why the rest of us should model proper English! We can be informal teachers-by-example.

I also dont like text talk. One thing that annoys me is when someone confuses allowed for aloud. Example. I am not aloud to go to the mall.
