This has posted on this thread already, several times in fact: There is no rule against text speak on WI.

No worries.

I certainly do not think a rule against text speech is infringement on freedom of speech, as it is not a rule stating you can't write what you want, it's just a recommendation that you write in such a way that anyone would actually be able to understand what you are trying to say. Infringement on freedom of speech would mean you are limited in what you are allowed to say, not the way you type it....

Honestly, I think what is not necessarily "ridiculous" but is very sad is that more and more younger people are losing the ability to actually type/write/speak in complete and proper sentences and their spelling is atrocious because they tend to use text speech too often....Honestly, I tend to avoid reading posts using text speech...my feeling is if someone is too lazy to write properly then perhaps what they have to say is not of great importance, especially since most of the text speech lingo is for simple commonly spoken phrases as opposed to a statement of significance....my honest opinion....

As well, it's a recommendation, not a rule...however, if you want what you say to be read by everyone....perhaps using proper English would be the way to go...I mean, would you ever write a resume up using text lingo....or would you write a test at school or essay in text lingo? If you want your voice heard be sure everyone can understand you....that's my motto!

It takes way too long to read. I think OMG is the only text speak that should be acceptable because people are uncomfortable when it is spelled out.

Although it is not a formal rule, it IS mentioned under something WI would rather us not do. You can find the link HERE. It talks about chat-speak under "Guidelines: Things we'd rather you not do".

Quote:
Guidelines: Things we'd rather you not do:
* Creating duplicate threads Before starting a new thread use the search feature to check that the subject of your intended post is not already covered by an existing thread. Post to existing threads wherever possible.
* Starting threads in the wrong forum We believe the board descriptions on the index page are fairly self explanatory, but feel to ask a mod if you aren't sure.
* Using 'Text Speak' in your posts. Please take the time to write replies in English.
* Posting entirely in capital letters Please do not post the subject or content of your posts entirely in capital letters. It scares us.
* Being rude to fellow members You don't like being called names or pushed around, please treat others as you would like them to treat you!
* Thread domination Do not try to bully someone into submission or disparage every comment they make, simply because their views may differ from your own. Write a coherent reply setting out your views and then let others have their say.
* Anonymous Sourcing If you copy and paste an article, piece of news or rumor to the forum please include a link to the original website source or explain where and the context of how you heard the story.
* Putting your trade list in your signature/profile Trading is only meant to be done in the Marketplace and within your own thread. By putting your trade list in your profile, you are advertising your items for trade outside of the Marketplace and in other people's threads which are both against the rules of the Marketplace.
* No RED or BLUE ink This is reserved for the moderators and admin to edit posts
* No bumping outside the gift exchange. Bumping is only allowed on your thread in the GE

I think it goes back to if you don't care for it don't do it, but don't try to make everyone else do it your way.

Well, actually, this site can make rules against what you can or cannot say. This is a privately owned site, so therefor they can make any rules they wish. Now, me saying that, the rules don't say anything about not be able to use text speak in your posts. The site would just rather you not do it. Many people do, though, and its fine.

Just my opinion, but writing big is not yelling. Writing is capitals is considered yelling, over the web. (It even says so under what I posted earlier, about the "Guidelines") Some people have a harder time seeing, and when you write big its easier for them to read -- in no way is it considered yelling.
