Seems like a lot of you didn't REALLY bother to read my whole initial post More than 50% pointing out the whole fake birthday potential situation, which I covered in my first paragraph on the matter.
I always sort of have to laugh when people are obsessed over the "nutsos out there" who might somehow endanger them. The media has perpetuated this idea that you are more likely to meet a crazy person on the internet that in your every day life, and it's so not true. Though I 100% agree that children need our protection from adults with bad agendas, and this includes on the internet, the likelihood that someone who finds out your general location on the internet is going to do you harm is miniscule. I've been using the internet since I was 17, I'm 30 now. I've probably met a minimum of 500 people who I initially met on the internet. I've not once found myself in a dangerous or threatening situation.
Be that as it MAY... ... I guess that unless the moderators somehow required photo identification to validate someone's birthday, it is probably best not to change the rules. It's sad, though, that parents can't fill the role of safekeeper rather than bulliten board moderators.
Diannabee - if someone really wants to know your location, they could find it out just from posts on a forum. The idea that any of us are really private on the internet is an illusion. *shrug* I understand what everyone is saying, and for those that are saying "*I* dont want people to know where I'm at," I never said people should be FORCED to tell
I know there is a rule that you are not supposed to mention your location in posts. I learned this when talking in my FYE sales post. It seems people do it anyway, and the moderators really can't keep up with all the postings to edit them out and issue warnings.
Maybe implement a rule where people who are 18 or over are allowed to discuss their location, but those under 18 can't? I know this is probably logistically impossible and will be shot down, but it's worth a thought! One issue that people might bring up is - how do you prove who is 18? But at least from a legal standpoint, all you have to do is require people to list their birthdate, and if they lie, it isn't your fault.
From your post down there, I will once again be forced to respectfully disagree.
It's even more 'nutzo' to think your safe on the internet than to think your always in danger. Truthfully.
Im really sorry, but i dont think this is a good idea. A child could put in a year, for example 1943, and actually not have been born then. And its never a good idea to put your age online, unless its very protected. As much as i love WI, i dont think its the safest place. Its very friendly, but anyone can join. Thanks for suggesting though!
It doesn't matter how old you are, dangerous people can target you. Even if you think WI doesn't have dangerous people, bad people know that little kids like Webkinz. It'd be easy for them to find the site, and if someone is giving away their location, they are masterminds and figuring out the exact pinpoint. It is dangerous and unsafe no matter how old you are ;-)
I'm going to have to agree with Hpharrypotterhp. When I join a website it's rare when I actually put my real age and date of birth. I just don't trust some. WI I think is one of the safest websites out there and too add this might mess it up. And besides, the Mods and Admins have GOT to make sure NO ONE gives out their location. That's like me saying I live in La La Land in Austalia. <----- That's just an example. I hate to say things like this, but I trruthfully don't think this would be safe. Sorry.
