Lightbulb Age References

Hi,

I love reading the threads here although rarely post since I don't feel that I have much to add.

However, when a post I made was removed (and I understand why) for having a vague reference to my age group - although not my actual age - it got me thinking.

I received a wonderfull explanation by Webberlily as to what is allowed and what is not.
"...It's against the rules (and the law) for children to post their ages.

Specific ages are not allowed. It's OK to say that you're a parent or a grandparent or that you have a niece. It's not OK to say that you're a child, early or late teens, college-age, etc..."

"...If you see age groups on the forum, it doesn't make it OK..."
But when I went back and read over the sites rules again all I could find was the general statement that posts can not state your actual age (nothing regarding age group). Yet clearly even vague references to age are not alllowed - a couple of examples of which are:
"Too old for much of webkinz but too young to have many children of my own." which suggests that the poster is likely in their late teens, or perhaps early 20's.
and
"My younger brother in Kindergarden while my older sister is starting high school." which would suggest the poster is between about 6 and 12.
I though that perhaps a new sticky posting clarify this (or an addition the the site rules) would be helpfull to other members considering the frequency that postings would appear to cross this line.

Just a thought I felt may be worth sharing.

Default Re: Age References

This is true; People should be careful when posting references to names, for their own safety. Even if you don't come right out and say, "I am x years old", what you do say, such as in your examples, can give a hint about ages.

That is true. I had a post deleted for saying my age group, and it was even more vague than that. But, I understand that it's illegal and all. But it should be clarified. I agree.

I try not to be too specific on my age, but I feel like you can probably guesstimate it by my posts. xP

But it is important.(: Thanks for posting this!

We feel these guidelines will be useful for the Mods in terms of managing the forums, but just as importantly, we hope they provide users a point of reference with which to understand the basic nature of WI and also to gauge why a post may have been moderated. The ultimate aim of it all though is to enable you to ENJOY contributing to WI and for others to ENJOY your contributions.

What is set out below is not an absolute set of rules and regulations. It will be necessary at times to moderate posts for reasons that are not outlined below.

Absolutely NOT: Things deemed to be totally unacceptable:

* Posting/ Sharing Personal Information (last name, age, city, school, phone number, etc)
* Posting/Sharing Personal Pictures (or pictures of friends, family, etc, anyone who is not a celebrity)
*NOTE: A person is considered a "celebrity" if they have a profile on www.imdb.com.
* Sharing e-mail addresses or Video Game Friend codes (Wii, XBOX, etc).
* Attempting to discuss trades outside of the Gift Exchange area (see note below)
* Pornographic material
* Racism
* Overt personal abuse or threats to other posters or staff
* Swearing (There are kidz here for Heaven's Sake!)
* Harassment of other users or posting anything which would invade their privacy
* Spam (including Chain Letters)
* Commercial advertising
* Registering and using duplicate accounts after being banned or for any reason.
* Creating fake news or doctoring of images.
* Selling or exchanging pet or eStore codes.
* All other breaches of the basic Forum Terms & Conditions in place at your time of registration or at any time during your membership of WI.

Guidelines: Things we'd rather you not do:

* Creating duplicate threads Before starting a new thread use the search feature to check that the subject of your intended post is not already covered by an existing thread. Post to existing threads wherever possible.
* Starting threads in the wrong forum We believe the board descriptions on the index page are fairly self explanatory, but feel to ask a mod if you aren't sure.
* Using 'Text Speak' in your posts Please take the time to write replies in English.
* Posting entirely in capital letters Please do not post the subject or content of your posts entirely in capital letters. It scares us.
* Being rude to fellow members You don't like being called names or pushed around, please treat others as you would like them to treat you!
* Thread domination Do not try to bully someone into submission or disparage every comment they make, simply because their views may differ from your own. Write a coherent reply setting out your views and then let others have their say.
* Anonymous Sourcing If you copy and paste an article, piece of news or rumor to the forum please include a link to the original website source or explain where and the context of how you heard the story.
* Putting your trade list in your signature/profile Trading is only meant to be done in the Gift Exchange and within your own thread. By putting your trade list in your profile, you are advertising your items for trade outside of the Gift Exchange and in other people's threads which are both against the rules of the Gift Exchange.
Nor may you ask for items , be it in a thread, avatar, or signature in the open forum.
* Talking about or asking about banned members Bannings are between the member and the staff
* No RED or BLUE ink when posting or replying to threads...this is reserved for the moderators and admin to edit posts with! However, you may use these colors for the...first post only...of your Gift Exchange Thread...to emphasize titles or subtitles to help highlight categories or sections...all other posts will be edited!
*Do not remove any Moderated posts made by staff members.
* Abusing the REP system by giving random REP will result in loss in ability to give it
*No bumping outside the Gift Exchange.

What to expect in terms of moderation:

If you ignore any of the ABSOLUTELY NOT rules, you'll be moderated in one of the following ways:

* Temporary or Full access ban.
* Temporary posting ban.

If you ignore any of the Guidelines, in the first instance you'll be notified by a moderator, who will let you know what it is they deemed to be inappropriate. Your post(s) are also likely to be edited/deleted or merged with others.

If you continue to ignore the Guidelines, you'll will find yourself being moderated in the same manner as if you violated one of the ABSOLUTELY NOT rules.

The above may also apply to posts reported to us via the 'Report To Moderator' feature.

What you can expect from us:

* Where possible/applicable, new users will be given a polite pointer to these guidelines if we deem it necessary.
* An explanation as to why you have been temporarily/permanently banned/had posting rights removed.
* We won't notify people of every little modification/deletion/merging activity.

Please note: This is an active online community. As such, it may be necessary for us to amend the posting guidelines from time to time to reflect the changes to the site and its users.

Also, we reserve the right to edit or remove any content we determine to be inappropriate including, but not limited to, posts, avatars, signatures, attachments, embedded pictures, links, etc.

Regards,
WI Admin.

Default Re: Age References

I would like to expand on Ziffster's point . . . I don't think she is arguing at all with the rules.

When a new person arrives at the WI Forum, the first place they will probably look to find the rules is in the Rules link in green text at the top Menu. Maybe I am wrong but I don't think this link takes you to the nice detailed rules that Dixiecup posted. The green link takes you to these rules in the spoiler below which are more general and do not as clearly state the age rule.

Spoiler: show
THE BIG RULES
NO SCAMMING - We don't tolerate scamming here on WI, please don't try it! No asking for people's passwords or giving out codes, or anything else that could lead to a member being scammed. If someone asks for your password, notify an admin/mod immediately!!

NO TRADING OUTSIDE OF THE GIFT EXCHANGE - In order to protect our members from scams, we have a special area set up for exchanging items called "The Gift Exchange". No trading or exchanging of any kind is to occur outside of our Gift Exchange. This includes user-hosted contests, etc. There will be no begging for items or asking people for items in their pictures.

NO RUDENESS OR BAD BEHAVIOR - WI is a community about Webkinz for everyone to have fun. Please respect your fellow members and treat them as you would like to be treated yourself!

PLEASE POST IN THE APPROPRIATE PLACE - We've done our best to set up categories and forums for you to post in. When you have something to post, check where you're posting it and make sure that it's the proper place. For example, if you have a question about using this website, post it in "WI Rules, Regulations, Support & Suggestions". If you want to know about rare items, post in the "Rare & Exclusive Items" forum under Arte's Curio Shop!

YOU ARE OVER 13 OR HAVE PERMISSION - We want to keep all of you safe and we want to make sure that your parents or guardian understand what membership at WI means. Please refrain from posting your e-mail address or any identifying information such as your name or where you live. If anyone asks this information from you, notify an administrator or moderator IMMEDIATELY. By agreeing to these rules, you certify that you are either: 1) over the age of 13, or 2) have your parents' or guardian's approval to participate as a member on the Webkinz Insider Forum.

To see the detailed rules that Dixiecup has posted I think you must first click in the subforum called "
WI Rules & Suggestions
and then you must click on 7th sticky.

Yes, you can also get to the rules in the Wiki but I have to agree that I think the detailed rules posted by Dixiecup (and originally by Kevin) could be easier to find, keeping in mind people who are absolutely brand new to the forum.

I have seen others ask if maybe there is supposed to be a link in that general green RULES link section that takes you to the detailed rules posted by Dixiecup. There are two regions that look kindof like tabs (Forum Rules and General rules). Clicking the Forum Rules does nothing on my computer. But I really don't know if that is meant to be a link or not.

I know just how very much thought and care go into these statements of the rules. I am only commenting on how easy it is for a new person to find the detailed rules.

Default Re: Age References

Thank you for pointing this out.

Somewhere in the rules on the Open Mike forum, I read that you can post your age IF and ONLY IF you are over 18. Even though this is the rule, I still don't think that just because someone is over 18 they are going to want to post their age. I think that even if it WASN'T against the rules to post your age, a majority of people still wouldn't post their age.

This is a good point -- just remember to think over your post before clicking the button! Another one is is you talking about losing teeth:

"I just lost two teeth the other day."

If you lost BABY teeth, this could suggest you are between 6-12 years old.
