Hi there. I've been forming this idea in my head, but I must say, it isn't quite one of those ideas that the staff can simply decide on very quickly. It would need discussion, and that's why I'm posting it here.

I think that WI should have a few members be "Forum Advisors". WI requires that all staff must be background checked, and to be background checked and asked the kind of questions they do, you must be 18 years old or older. However, these members would not have to be 18 or older, because they would not be background checked. The reason for this is that they would not have any special "powers" on the forum (Maybe a few simple ones, but nothing like editing posts and such). They could be trusted members that know a lot about WI and Webkinz, members that would handle things in a nice, ordely way. When members need help, they know that they can always turn to a "Forum Advisor" for the help. Sometimes questions get ignored in the Somebody Help! section because of the mass of questions, and the staff can be quite busy... so these Forum Advisors could do the job.

Basically, Forum Advisors would be members that can be trusted with the answers, active, and efficient.

I completely understand if this does not work out, because chances are, it will not. Still, I hope you'll take this idea into consideration.

Thanks so much.

I think this is a job we should all take and perform the tasks of, whether or not we get a title. I think this sort of position just sort of comes naturally. Like, there are people who answer the questions in the somebody help section, and people start to trust them and ask them question. I know I've had some people PM me with questions about WKW/WI even though I didn't have a title.

I understand Lilypad. But sometimes, people- by mistake- give out the wrong information. A forum advisor could be a totally reliable source to ask.

This is a good idea but I think most of us do it without a title. It is just being friendly and nice to others. Usually when someone asks for advice or info they get more than one person answering and usually that helps with reliability issues. If one person says something but the 10 others say something else usually they have it right. I posted a response on someones question with what I thought was a right answer and it's what I would have done if it was my problem and someone else said the same thing and then 3 other people had a different answer that was specific to a glitch that I didn't know about. This site is about being helpful to all and we should be helping each other.

I see why you would want this. You dont really know people on the internet. I also think that just adults being mods and admins, are totally, not good. I mean, if someone gets in a fight with someone else over something stupid like, IDK. Uh, something chilidish, a kid would understand why! And give them a reasonable punishment. But thats off topic. Love where your going with the background check and everything (:

That was awesome Lilypad! I think that most WI members really try to do this too!

I think it's against COPPA laws for WI to use persons under the age of 18 in any official capacity.

Good idea! But actually I think they have this already. Admin usually will PM the member & tell them that they're thread or post has been taken off for a reason, the reason is there too. I'm not positive though.

Actually, FIA posted this on another thread:
Quote:
All of the staff here on WI are volunteers, not employees, so Federal Law doesn't apply there. The reason all staff members at WI must be at least 18 years old is because we require that all staff go through a criminal background check. That involves sharing information we cannot legally ask for from someone who is under-age.

If the advisors did not recieve background checks, then yes, they could be under 18. They would not be considered staff, and they would not have any major special 'powers' like the staff.

Ah! Thank you for posting that for me!

I do like the fact that the volunteer staff that has "titles" like admin, moderator, etc, have had background checks though. I think that is important and very responsible on the part of WI. Especially since there are so many people under 18 on this forum. I wonder if the gift coaches have background checks too?

I know there are many very responsible and helpful people under 18 here on WI. But as a parent I would prefer that they not have a title of authority without a background check. A title of "Advisor" does convey authority.

We actually had these in the past and as you suggested, they were younger members who were exactly what you described...advisors. They were called forum protectors.

Once the Safe Harbor and COPPA laws came into being, there was some concern the laws would even apply to the fps. So as not to pose any liability to the website and themselves, Justin and Wendy relunctantly agreed to eliminate the positions.

As suggested above though, we rely heavily on many of you to help us out all the time...and its very much appreciated.
