If you use the "Google" option for the search, it works with quotations.

Hi Elephant,

I tried it, but it doesn't seem to bring up any of the Gift Exchange Trading Threads, which is where I spend the most time searching and where I was hoping to be able to search with quotations.

It is great to know though if I am trying to search for anything else on WI. It seems to work well on the rest of WI.

Thanks so much for your help.

Blessings

Actually, if you just click the regular search here on WI it works with quotations, as well.

Does it work differently if you choose "advanced search" or search within a forum?

Thanks so much Justin! It is a great help to realize that the quotation marks do limit the search.

I just went to the advanced search and did some experimenting.

I tried again and found that the quotations do work. I was quite confused because even though I put the phrase I wanted, for example "Banana Hammock", every time the word banana or hammock or banana hammock together was used in the thread - those words were bold red. Individually or together. To illustrate, I will use pink instead of red.

Banana Milkshake
Tree Hammock
Banana Hammock

So, I had wrongly assumed the search was looking for those words individually instead of together.

Tonight I did a search for (the infamous) Banana Hammock - Once in quotation marks and another time without - I specified the Gift Exchange threads and the entire thread as my options.

Each time it brought up different threads in a different order. So it must be pulling the words up together when in quotations.

The other part of the equation that made it hard to tell is that the search engine searches the entire thread. Therefore, if anyone ever traded for this item in the past and that word combination is somewhere in the thread, it pulls it up.

Of course, I am just looking at the first post or two for the GE List and list of wants. So when I was trying the quotation marks before, I couldn't tell if that exact word combination had been used unless I went through the entire thread searching for it. Which I had no reason to do.

It is great to know that the quotation marks do limit the search. Now, if I could limit my search to the first two posts in a thread, searching in the gift exchange would be a breeze.

Thanks again Justin for your clarification!

Blessings

I too often wonder if there is an easier way to find the info I am seeking. This is such an awesome site full of so much info, if only I could find it when I need it
