These are all GREAT suggestions! I, too, have been vexed by the smiley face when I intended to write the number eight in parentheses for my Gift Exchange. Now I know how to avoid it! Thanks to all who gave input on this thread!
I'm sure many of you weren't around at this time, but it used to be when you put "???" it turned out to be this smiley face: . Now it's when you put :???*: without the *, you get that face.
Well, since that was changed I hope this is able to be changed...
When ever you put 8*) without the *, you get . That's a little inconvenient. So like, whenever you put an 8 in parenthesis you get that face instead of what you want to type. Just recently I joined the Dog Owners Club and said
Casey, (who is now 8*)...
And it turned 8*) into that smiley face. It can get a little annoying.
With all respect to WI, I'm suggesting we change the code for to maybe :8 ): or something like that .
Yes, for me as an RP owner, this is very troubling.
With my own username : Cheerleader98
When I put who owns the character, if the last item in the username is 8, and I do this () it'll look like this:
I agree with you on this. Even though there are ways to get around it turning into a smilie, it's easy to forget that 8) will turn into , and in my opinion, it'd be better to simply changed the code.

Inserting "=)" gives the same effect.
It would also be a sacrifice you would have to be willing to make. If you knew you wanted an actual smilie in your post, you wouldn't use the option. You'd make do with using the short cuts like spacing or adding symbols in.
Like Ratty pointed out, you don't have to disable all the smilies in a post. You can just put [noparse] tags around whatever you don't want to turn into a smilie.
