We have a child who is differently-abled and it is hard when no one seems to understand how wonderful and talented he is under all the "craziness." They mostly just label him- and us for advocating for him- as "difficult" and avoid us.

What can I do to make a difference in the life of
someone with special needs?

My cousin has Autism. When we were younger I had no clue she had Autism. I thought she was just "special". When my grandpa came to me and told me she had Autism, I thought different of her. When she wanted to play, I didn't want to, I thought she was very, very annoying. Until I learned she was in this class, a special class. I didn't know what to feel. My Aunt, says she gets called mean things. That is why she is in the " special classes".

What can I do to help?

I can play with her, even when I don't want to. I can help her with her with her homework ( she is my age, but, not same grade) she can't do the homework I can do. That will make a world of difference for her, and more of a friend out of me.

Oops! I meant to post on my account. Apparently it did not log off my sister's account, but thankfully, I did not post on the actual thread... my sister would be mad at me!

What Can I do to Make a Difference in the Life of Someone with Special Needs?
Never give up. I am homeschooling my special needs child because the district was unable to accommodate his multiple needs and just left him sitting in a mainstream classroom all morning with no interaction and no encouragement and teachers reprimanding his behavior in a humiliating way. It is hard because I just want him to be able to keep up but sometimes he just can't and it makes me worry about his future as an adult. His childhood has been unpleasant much of the time. What job will he have? What support people? We have been asked by 2 doctors to leave their practice because we are "noncompliant" and "disruptive" because we question and refuse inappropriate care and they spend too much time helping us. His grandparents and other family are unsupportive. Neighbors have called us cruel names and shun us. What kind of life? It is mind-boggling and no one seems to understand and they definitely don't care. We still see every milestone as a triumph, even though it has taken much longer than another child. We praise his efforts to do his best and always try to teach him to show others his best self, hopefully without crushing his spirit and individuality. I don't know if we have done everything we could to help him--sometimes I doubt it--but we never give up trying!

What interesting facts did I learn by researching Autism online?
I learnt that Autism starts at birth or before the child is two and a half years old, and that one in 150 children are born with Autism, and many people do not understand what Autism truly encompasses.
