yes totally. people avoid them cuz they think theyre weird. i mean, once in a while they can act odd but who doesnt? example: yibbety bebbety
i would actually say something like that in RL, sometimes i test my friends by acting super weird to see if they're a true friend or not. a true friend will accept my weirdness.
Then you just need to change your perception of "productive"!
Even a severely developmentally delayed Autistic individual can do independent things and have a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Even if all he can do is volunteer a couple days a week at a local library collecting the recycling. Even if he needs someone to do it with him to get all the steps in order! Any acheivable goal is a success story.
Maybe he will never go to college, drive a car, or get married. Who decided that those should be every individual's life goals? I bet there are a lot of other things in life that will give him joy and fulfillment if he's given opportunities, and not overprotected or kept from the community.
Don't cry for what he cannot do. Clap for what he can.
He can not volunteer, between his medications and his feet being turned in it's hard for him to get around. He's in a wheel chair when we walk more then just a little. Being around a lot of people agitates him. Without his medications he can become violent. He can't dress, or clean himself. He's most happy at home watching his cartoons. Are we clapping yet? All we can do is make him as comfortable and happy as we can.
I am really happy for those who are higher functioning and will be able to do more in life. But that simply is NOT the case for all of them. I'm sorry but I found your post to be rude, to say we are "keeping" him from the community. To me it shows that a lot of people have hardly become "aware" of the situation for many. And that these "months" really aren't teaching people the whole story.
Wanted to add that if someone wants to learn the facts about Autism (or any disorder/condition) there are plenty of other resources with experts that will give you the true facts. I would also suggest speaking to a doctor or other professional. Seems some are confusing raising awareness and telling people how they should feel/act/and do when it comes to situations they know nothing about. By raising awareness we should be pointing people towards professionals and experts, and most certainly not assume we know about every situation out there. Perhaps this site should remain about Webkinz, and leave the "awareness" to sites that specialize in the subject.
