Default Snowflake Roundup: Winterfest 2010 Analysis: Successes, Failures, Likes, Dislikes, New Ideas for Future, Suggested Improvements, Things You'd Eliminate

Still Under Construction:
The general idea of this thread is given;
Feel free to add your experience & 2 cents worth,
but keep in mind that mine is still being updated and
won't be finished until late tonight.
I need to make an RE run into town shortly, and will return after class.

============================================================

Well, Winterfest 2010 is winding down as I write this.

This year there were a total of 10 prizes available on 2 locations-
9 on WW [some (*) also on WebkinzNewz on particular day(s)]:
-Winterfest Window
-*Winterfest Hoodie
-Wool Scarf Jacket
-*Magic W Toque
-Icicle Wind Chime
-*Potted Ice Flower
-*Snow Cone
-*Peppermint Hot Chocolate
-*Roasted Chestnuts
and 1 unique to WebkinzNewz:
-Snowman Cookie

This is a place to:
- celebrate successes (were you able to get what you wanted),
- lament misses
- offer critiques
- suggest improvements you thought of during the event
- offer new ideas for consideration
- suggest items you'd like to see in future years
- praise changes you liked
- list what you just did not care for
etc.

=================================
Here's my 2 cents:

Experience:
I worked on several accounts for family, and tried to help a friend a little
near the end of the event.
I also spoke to friends & their children & cousins to put this together.

We had a pretty positive experience due to the fact that I was able to

spend a good deal of time on this.
We were able to get at least one of each item for our family accts.
The other acct I was helping a bit with got all but the window. [subject to change].

.
New Features we liked:
.

Suggested Improvement:
-For the WKN items, you were asked for both your account and password
I know several child users whose parents have told them NOT to ever say/
print their password except when logging in. Couldn't it just be the WW account name?
-The request for account name on WKN was confusing to some - they thought they neeed to ope acconthey ar allowed to,thdi not parpate

===========
Like:
Asian starting at midnight their time
extending across 2 weekends
Dislike:
problems the self-updating ads were causing
suggest:
You forgot most US schoolchildren were off Monday for MLK,
and many also had Tuesday off (if end of half-year teacher work day)
the flakes should have been more plentiful then
Start Friday after school (3pm) instead of midnight-
some of us have busy weekends
remember there are players who can only come on at night, so don't
snowflakes should have a sound so they are more noticeable on more screens [flakes blend-in on some]; would help visually impaired users.
no password required on WKN - just account name; call it WW account name
so people are not confused & think they need to set up a WKN account -
which some parents will not let them do.
===========
explain expected fall rate clearly
e.g. flakes are released every 6 minutes, but they might not land in
your account each time.
have a method/form to register problems
for those who cannot call during business hours or happen on weekends:
e.g. I was logged in for 3 hours and only 1 flake appeared.
have a blizzard alert each day for 15 minutes [vary times, but do it in range when children would be home from school in that time zone & on weekends]
when they run every 30-45 seconds
Many children have been frustrated searching this year - including my munkins & friends.

I wish it had been a click on day 1 for this item, click on day 2 for another item. I got 8-10 of certain items and none of other items.

A sound with the snowflake would have been nice as it is hard to stare at the screen all the time. :p

I really like your suggestions for a noise with the flakes, and a blizzard period.
The extra Friday evening start would also be good - winter Fridays are home days for us-
we go out as much as possible on Saturday and Sunday.

We did okay, but not everyone got a window.
It would have been nice for everyone to get a pair.

It would have been nice if WKN offered times to get each of the 10 items -
maybe rotate what they offered every 6 hours so 9 days x 4 prizes = 36 prizes.
So with 10 items everything would have 3 definite times periods offered and some would have 4.

I agree about doing away with asking for the password. My dd was confused about that too.

We agree that it was hard for families without involved adults.
Our neighbors have 4 children. Each is allowed 1 hour of computer time during the week,
and can earn 1/2 hour in the evening IF homework and chores are complete and they had
good behavior that day. Not easy with 2 boys and 2 girls. The youngest did not have anything until this weekend.

I liked the variety of prizes this year.

I wish the blue snowflake rug had been a prize.

Maybe a special room in the clubhouse for the event - the blizzard room - which could list times
when a blizzard would happen next [like your 15 minute suggestion, but maybe 3 5-minute times a day].

This was definitely better than the Fall event.

I hope next year is even better.
