I was told by a customer service rep that the core (inside of the charm) was made of lead. It was within the legal limits but they decided to stop production in case there were younger children that chewed on the charms. I am not sure if this is accurate, but that is what I was told. She also told me that they are looking for another manufacturer to produce the charms with no lead content. I am not sure what is taking them so long to find another manufacturer!!! I wish they would do something (even if they started making plastic charms --- that would be better than nothing). They should produce a charm forest shirt with a code that could get you into the charm forest! They could produce a different shirt for each charm!!! Or maybe they could make plastic/rubber shoe charms!:el1:
My mom freaked out about this because she thought they had lead, she won't even let me touch my charm. What I heard from Elubin is that it didn't have lead, they talked to the creative director about it. Who knows, there seem to be many stories...
I heard the same thing SnowCrystal did. The Webkinz charms were within safe limits; but since there was so much negativity at that time with other toys and lead, they decided to pull. I don't think it was even an issue of whether or not they were safe - I think they always have been within legal limits - it was more of a public relations decision to avoid any type of negative press comparing them to one of the other pulled toys. Nothing's been issued officially. I'd wear them.
