As I maintain over 60 gardens (most for profit and not all on one account) I can safely say you do not need to water.
However you will want to rake and harvest them. You can let a harvest sit for one day but beyond that it will die. Someone said it was two days but I don't go beyond one.
Also if you don't rake them they will die. I had to watch as one of my Collie plants decided to super glue itself down so I couldn't do anything to it. It got weeds and within two or three days it was dead. It never went to it's harvest stage. I actually had to have it "docked" so I could replant it and dig it. Grows normally now.
I never water, but I do weed and harvest every day. Everything grows just fine. There are more weeds when you don't water, but that still takes a lot less time than watering every plant every day. It is a great money maker. I have 4 gardens on 3 different accounts and it really adds up.
I think (i'm not sure but...) you need to water everyday and if you miss one or two days you have to rake anymore than that you have to dig and start over! I think you should water them when you first plant though!
just a educated guess hope I help!
