Thanks for the information, everybody! I think it was the same thing several people mentioned - it installed something called "Spyware Protect 2009" on my computer (and I am positive I didn't tell it to install anything at all!). And then when I tried to Google it to figure out how to get it off, it blocked my Google search. It's scary that something like that can get through even a pretty secure corporate network. We're in the process of removing it from the computer - it happened right after 5, so we were there until 6:30 trying to get the computer to even allow us to update the antivirus software and start a full system scan to run overnight. I'm going to go in this afternoon and see what needs to be done next. And thanks fairlyoddmom for clearing up what was going on a few weeks ago - I'm glad Justin was able to fix that!

I have gotten the same trojen multiple time ... at home and at work. AFter watching the techie at work, I knew which program to download and run and now when it pops up again, I run it and reboot = all gone.

It's more of a nuisance now than anything. The first time it happened tho I freaked out. lol

My Mom got hit with this one - and she tried to get her virus people to help and all they never did help her - and they recommended IE - it took me a few tries to get the right malware cleaner but we did eventually get rid of it.

There is a new version of IE - version 8 - that you might want to try if you get hit again.

I had this at one point when I [for some unknown reason] was on WI using Internet Explorer. I don't think WI itself has the virus, but I think it's one of the ads that does - when I accidentally clicked on one of them, I picked it up. [Or at least Trend Micro detected that someone was trying to put one on and blocked it and the site.]

I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus, and I haven't had any other problems here.

If you get a popup that declares that you have a virus and provides you with a link that goes to a site that sells an antivirus program you don't have a real virus - it's a fake - *but* it's also a huge nuisance and still needs to be cleaned out of your PC - but your normal antivirus program won't work (because it's not a real virus). That may be way he is using a tool other than the regular antivirus software.

Google "Perfect Defender" to learn more about this kind of trojan.
This is the pop up that I'm getting all afternoon! Is there a way to get rid of it?

There is no virus on WI, and if a site tried to inject spyware into your system after clicking the ad, this means that the site that the ad led to (and not the ad itself) may have had spyware on it. Unfortunately, Adblock Plus blocks ads entirely and robs WI of any ad revenue.

We use IE at work, so I should have known better, but I went here anyway and today a virus slipped through the firewall and the antivirus and made itself right at home. Has anyone else had this problem?
I got the same thing... my anti virus program said it was a high risk. I got the IP where it came from and stuff and it wasent WI i think its the ads.

The virus is a nasty trojan. It pops up saying you need to update your virus protection. Normal ones don't recognize this virus b/c of how the coding is written. If you click the 'update' you have given the virus access to everything on your computer. It gets in and hides and uses words that normal virus protection softwares use.

This site talks about it more. This is the site one techie said to use. The techie at work used this site. I was leery of using either one until I was told to use them by the techies as they work with this sort of stuff every day.

The virus is a nasty thing. IE lets it through and FF does not. It comes from regular browsing.
