Well...

(12-3)/(2+1)

Ever heard of the order of operations?

Parenthesis ( )
Exponents
Multiplication/Division * /
Addition/Subtraction + -

First, deal with items in the parenthesis.

(12-3) is in parenthesis... So is (2+1)

So... you solve those first.

12-3= 9
2+1= 3

So after solving items in parenthesis... what's next?

9/3

Exponents.. there are none.. so..

Multiplication/Division. Yes. / is another symbol for division.

9/3= 3.

What's the question? I may be able to solve it.

I've seen a few people say the answer is 3.

In math when using the "steps" - parenthesis are done first.

The (12-3) part tells you to find the answer to that as well as the answer on bottom before dividing the equation.
