In a thread where you're asking for help, there should be bold green writing at the top of each persons' post. Just click on whichever post you found the most helpful, and voila, the thread closes. Just click on one of the links below.. (they're both the same but named differently for some reason...)
I think that the "mark the best answer - closes thread" is a feature only on the "somebody help" section of the forum. If you posted your question somewhere else, and the question is answered, you can flag the thread and write "please close". A moderator or administrator will then close your thread. You can also change the title of your thread to something like "Answered, please close", and a staff member will close it.
If you want to close a thread that isn't in the Somebody Help! forum, then you can't do it on your own. You have to flag the thread, which is just clicking the red flag on the first post, which was made by you. When you click on the red flag, you can write "Please close." and then click 'Submit.'
