This may sound harsh but taking something, even virtual items, without the owner's permission is the same as stealing. The account and whatever is in it belongs to someone else even if they are not using it. It does not belong to you. I know it makes it very hard that you have not spoken to this person in over a year and you want something from her now but asking her for it before you take it is the only fair and honest thing to do. Maybe she will say yes, maybe she won't, but at least you have done the right thing by reminding her that her account is going to expire and asking about her items. You might even discover that the two of you can begin talking or emailing each again and continue the friendship that you used to have. I hope it all works out for you
It is not your account, so it is not right to tamper with it. I would just let it go, personally. They give you reminders as to when your account will expire, and if she has not gotten them, she has lost interest, and it would be a waste to put a pet on it, and then never have her touch it.
If anything, call her, and in casual conversation ask "I think you Webkinz account is due to expire. Are you planning on renewing it?"
