hi there. i am a tech savvy adult and have been using gimp safely for years. there is no spyware associated with gimp. it is fun and i have never heard of anyone having issues with their computer after running it. as always, a grown up should be the one to download and install any new program. hope that helps!
oh and gimp is great fun! it is a little clunky to figure out at first but once you start figuring it out, it is brilliant. you can download lots of free special effects, better lettering options etc. (i love stereofideic lettering myself)
you can edit pictures or draw your own. you can merge many layers of pictures too. i run a small online arts store and use gimp for all of my banners and digital arts... i also use gimp to create and edit pictures for use in a graphic online store for tee shirts and shoes etc. i take pictures of my paintings, import into gimp and edit to make them ready to load onto coffee mugs etc.
my point is that it is almost as diverse and fun as photoshop and completely free. have fun creating!
