Default Answered: Avatars and Backgrounds?

Hey! I was wondering, how do you guys make the really cool avatars, backgrounds, and signatures? I know there are many places you can ask someone to make you one, but I really want to make my own. Are there certain programs/softwares to use? If so, are they available for a Mac computer? Thanks!

There are many programs and editors online like lunapic.com and picnik.com.
You can also download a program called GIMP for free, but I'm not sure if it works on a Mac.....

There are also programs like Photoshop (most popular, they do make it for Mac) and Paint Shop Pro, but they can be kinda expensive.
